Hi. I have a very old (2013) MacBook Pro. Right now, it is running MacOS Mojave 10.14.6 and I am trying to upgrade to macOS Big Sur. I realize that this may not be possible as my Mac is very old. In any event, at a certain point, I get asked to login as an Administrator. The only password I have is my Apple ID. I tried that password, but it was rejected. I tried to reset the password but was told I needed to request one and that the process would take several days. I never heard back. That was weeks ago. I tried again today to reset my Apple ID and got a message telling me a "message" had been sent to my mac. Not sure what that means. To my email? Checked email. Nothing. Any suggestions appreciated.

The Admin password isn't your Apple ID password, typically it's the password for the account on your Mac (as the first account created on a Mac has admin privileges). Do you have to type a password when you log into your Mac?

Thanks for the helpful feedback. Ok, now I know the Admin password is not my Apple ID. And, as you suggested, the password I use to log on does indeed turn out to be the "admin" password. Thanks - as I type this reply, Mac OS Big Sur is being installed. So problem apparently solved (although I will need to wait to see if the installation completes successfully). Do you know enough to tell me whether my old Mac will indeed be able to run Mac OS Big Sur? Big thanks.

Well, the install wouldn't even start if your Mac couldn't run BigSur. How well it runs, you'll just have to wait and see.

Don't forget, you should get your Apple ID password sorted out too! Once you're on BigSur, you should hopefully start seeing the message pop up on your Mac to reset it.
