Hi: Just bought an Iphone this weekend & it is virtually unusable for phone calls unless I plug in the ear phones. I can hardly hear the person I'm speaking with at the max volume with or without using the speaker phone.

Is there some setting I can change or do I need to take the phone back? I bought this at a local ATT store. We don't have an Apple store in town. Would I have to return it to Apple directly or will the ATT store look at it or take it back?

Thanks much for any info!

You are not alone. Many people have logged complaints about earpiece volume, including myself. Mine has to be set to the max and ear pressed hard to get decent caller volume. Forget driving in a car with a window down or being in a slightly noisy environment. Hopefully this can and will be updated with a software update.

thanks

Thanks so much for your reply. The car is where I became most frustrated today.

Sounds like it's not worth trying to return the phone? Wish to heck I was near an Apple store.

I took mine to an apple store after even comparing the volume with a friend's iphone and we both agreed theirs was louder. Not by much, but noticeable. The apple store genius took it in the back room and came back saying that it was within spec. I love the phone too much to return it for this issue so I'm just waiting for the update hopefully.

I'm glad people are speaking up on this topic. My ONLY problem with my iPhone is the inconsistent volume levels I get during a conversation. It seems to be ok if the other person is on a landline. When I talk to my girlfriend and she's on her iPhone, we're both constantly complaining about the volume going up to distortion levels, and then attenuating to levels too low to hear.

I hope an update will even out these audio problems.

I really hope you all removed the "protective sheild", oh , I mean packaging material! :)

Some have decided to leave that clear film on the face, it needs to come off since it covers the speaker. I am sure at this point you have, but there are still people out there insisting on leaving it on.

I've notices that sometimes when making a call with the external speaker with volume turned up, the first ring is loud, the second starts loud then gets slightly softer and stays that way.

i have noticed that too, that the first ring is loud (decent volume) and the second ring is noticeably quieter
