Problems with Airplay

I just got an Airport Express and connected it to my stereo. I got it to use Airplay for streaming music from my iPhone 4S, but every time I do Airplay fails and other strange things happen. I start streaming a song, press the lock button and about 1 to 2 minutes latter it stops playing and will show there is no WiFi signal. The very strange thing is that when Airplay on the i4S fails, it causes my internet connection to go down for about 45 seconds. I will be on my MBP and it will show that there is no internet connection. I will also look at my iPad, it it will show that there is no internet connection. If I stream music from my MBP or iPad Airplay does not fail. My MBP has the latest the latest OSX update, the airport has the latest firmware, my iPad still has the last iOS4 (I didn't update to iOS5), and my iPhone has the latest iOS5.

I would like to figure out what this issue is, but I feel like there is an problem with iOS5. Is anyone else experiencing.

When you say your internet "goes down for about 45 seconds", are you connected to that Airport Express to get on the network?

How did you set up the express? Bridge mode? What is the rest of your network configuration like? modem/router etc..?

I have a wireless Linksys router that transmits WiFi. The Airport Express is set up only to receive signal from the Linksys and Airplay devices, it does not transmit WiFi. When Airplay on my iPhone fails it disrupts the signal from the Linksys to my MBP, iPad and iPhone. My MBP will say that there is not internet connection; this is what I meant by "goes down for about 45 seconds".

the airport doesn't talk directly to your phone, it still goes through the linksys.

have you tried rebooting your linksys?
is your firmware up to date in the linksys?
possibly try a factory reset on the linksys?

^ I'm with this person's line of though that the linksys is the the problem.

And as far as I know there is no such thing setting up an Airport Express to "only receive wifi" thats not how these devices work.

there is a setting to receive wi-fi it's called "join a network"

but even if your devices are on the same wireless network, they don't talk to each other directly, it always goes though the wireless base.

It's not your router or Express, it's the 4S. I've been having the same issues with my 2011 Time Capsule, AE and 4S. Just Googling "4S drops Airplay" brings up an 18 page thread on the Apple Community page with others having the same issue.

I even went as far as asking a Genius and they just swapped out my phone. Of course it didn't fix the issue, but the recent 7.6.1 firmware for Airports did seem to help. I personally think it's the WiFi chip in the 4S as it's my only device I have issues with. Other Apple devices in my house like an iPad 2 and iPhone 4 have zero issues.

From the Apple Community thread some have said that 5.1 beta 3 seems to have fixed the issue, so we should expect a fix in March.

I didn't realize that it could be a hardware issue. My iPad1 on iOS4 has no problem at all, so I thought the problem was iOS5. Since my iPad and MBP have no problem, the cause must be hardware or iOS5.

Do you have iOS5 on your I4 and iPad 2?

Oh yeah. All of my Apple devices are fully up to date. That's also why I'm leaning towards it being a hardware issue since my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 both running 5.0.1 have no issues.
