I just got a 24" imac last week and have had problems with airport. When I first got it the internet was fast but the 2nd time i used it it was slow. Way slower than dialup. I thought it was my router so I bought a new netgear router.... Same thing, worked at first and then it was slow again. I tried a belkin router... same thing. I bought a apple airport extreme and got the same thing. When its working good enough to actually load a page I did a speed test online and got 330 mbps and I got 370 with my iphone. I have tried to call apple support but wait times are too long for me to sit around on the phone. Is this a big enough problem where I should just take it to an apple store and see if somethings wrong with the computer?

Boot holding down 'D' on they keyboard and do the diagnostic.

I'm thinking this is an internet issue not a wireless issue. Try doing a speed test directly connected at different times in the day. Also, some ISP's will throttle the speed of your modem to 15kbs (Bell Sympatico for example) when they 'suspect' the use of P2P. Now they say it only slows down the P2P but there is a class action suite against them for slowing down all the users traffic.

If its a wireless issue, try running a ping to your router and see how the times are. ping -t will run a continual ping in terminal.

Also, are you running a microwave, AC, furnace, cordless phones while doing the tests? Is the computer in a room with older walls that might have paint with metals in it? Door closed door open. (The last two points apply to my place). Wireless can be tricky and you can get dead zones in the strangest places.

You could try a wireless analyzer like Kismac. I know there are others out there if you don't like Kismac.

Do you have anything else connected to the router, any b or g gauge devices would slow it down... that is what apple support told me. So I have two routers one for N only and one for all other connections... good luck...

Probably an obvious question, but have you confirmed that you are connecting to your wireless router and not a neighbors?

Do you have any friends that could bring over their laptop to check connect speeds to isolate the network out fo the equation?

this is why i run extremely long cords to where my computers are because if theres too much computers hooked to the wireless it gets extremely slow, is this your only computer hooked to wireless is there anymore, because i took a few off wireless well actually only my ps3 and told my brother to turn off his imac when not being used and using just his pc laptop and my macbook on wireless has made it very speedy, and keeping a pc emac and older imac on wire just makes everything much faster. ahh im rambling about nothing sorry :D
