Having separate problems on my iPhone and iPad I would like to crowdsource, both of which suddenly arose under iOS 12.

On my iPhone, since upgrading to iOS 12.3, a handful of apps consistently crash within a few seconds of being launched. Then, when re-opened, it works fine. But it is a constant issue. The biggest culprit is the MLB app, which I have been using for years without issue. I have deleted and reinstalled the app (and some of the others this happens with) but this did not solve anything. I don't know why it just started on 12.3, but that is what has triggered the issue across the board. Has anyone encountered these issues or recommend a fix?

On my iPad, a number of months back I was discovering that the battery was being worn down from 100% charge intot he 20s within a few days, even when it was stored in a drawer and not being used. I checked Battery Usage and noticed that Background Refresh on a VoIP app was running it down quickly. As I didn't need the app on my iPad (I have it on my phone which didn't cause these issues), I just deleted the app. But I am not having the issue with Apple Mail being the culprit. For some reaosn, the Background Refresh on Mail runs down the iPad battery, even when not in use. I need Mail on the iPad and would like to have it checking for emails in the background, so what would folks recommend to alleviate this? As with the Phone issue, I have been using the app in this manner for years without an issue. TIA.

Apple has cracked down on background apps that have exploiting Bluetooth to keep them running in the background in the upcoming iOS 13. You’ll be prompted to allow Bluetooth access for apps.

What you can test, turn off Background App Refresh to see how battery life is. Enable it again but manually allow for specific apps (like Apple apps). In the past, I have always disabled Background App Refresh and started to use Outlook/Gmail app for my emails. When you have push enable for Mail, it can drain the battery so it might be better to use fetch (less often) if your emails are not time-critical. You can also try to use the official email (Outlook, Gmail etc) apps to see how much it can affect your battery.

Is your device on the latest iOS? Have you tried to update via iTunes to install the full firmware than patch update via OTA? Have you done a restore? Have you updated available app, close all background apps and restart the device? How’s the battery health?

Thanks for the response. Here is the rub: the app causing the issue right now is an Apple app (Apple mail). This isn't - currently - a matter of a third-party developer pulling something (I deleted the VoIP app), it is Apple's in-house issue. Plus, I do sort of want Mail checking for email in the background, so not looking to disable that.

To your other q's: I am using 12.4 on all iDevices through OTA update (all have been for some time). I have not connected anything to iTunes to restore or install updates that way. Battery health on the device is good, that doesn't appear to be the issue, and I have both closed the app in question (and other apps) and restarted the device. Mail still causes these issues frequently, but only on the iPad.
