I have a latest gen 32gb iPod Touch. Overall, iOS 5 seems good, but the one thing that is not working smoothly is the camera. At first it seemed to be fine, and I could see a preview of what the camera was pointing at (although I did not take a picture right away). When I tried to switch to the rear-facing camera, the app locked up, and has not functioned since--now the pretend iris graphic never opens up so I do not get a preview. Some third party camera apps seem to be affected as well, but some seem more or less OK. Before the update, the camera was in good working order.

I have heard of some other camera-related issues with iOS 5 but not this. Anyone heard of anything similar?

I'd give Apple a call and/or make an appointment with a Genius. Have you tried killing the Camera app in the multitasking tray and relaunching it? Have you restarted the iPod? Restored to a backup before you had the issue?

I have done the following several times:

  • killed and restarted the camera app
  • powered down and restarted the iPod
I have not tried restoring to a backup--is it possible to downgrade the OS to an earlier version, without just resetting to the factory settings, and wiping the data? I am willing, but I just want to make sure there is not a less drastic option.

Apple won't communicate with me directly (as far as I can tell) until I give them money, since the iPod is past warranty. I will try the Genius bar soon, since just showing it to them is free.

With iOS 5 installed, I was able to "restore" to a 4.3.5 backup so I could get my data back. It fixed all of my data and kept iOS 5. So even if you restore from an earlier backup, you'll still have iOS 5.

Same problem here

I have the same problem here on a iPod Touch 4th gen i bought a year ago. All apps that use the cam can't access the front cam. The rear cam works fine but when you switch to the front cam distortion apears in the image or the app hangs all togheter.
