Hi,
I'm going to be getting a macbook or macbook pro within the next month. I found a listing on craigslist for a Core Duo macbook pro, but I've heard that they had some problems. What were the issues with that version of the laptop and how severe did they get?
Thanks

well they can get pretty bad...
1)uneven backlighting
2)over heating
3)battery problem... etc ..etc

ui can do a search in the mac rumours webby, there is a list of all the problem of Rev A MBP... :)

At least get the Rev B (C2D... 2.16Ghz version) its much better

Let's get a few things straight here:

1. Apple have used several LCD panels from various manufacturers, all meeting the same specs. The CD and C2D machines pretty much use the same panels and are affected by the same issue: they all have a somewhat grainy appearance. Uneven backlighting can be a problem on any machine and I've personally have never seen the problem. Mine works fine, along with others I have seen.

2. I've never seen any posts of a heat-related failure, not that would be easy to prove by the end-user anyway. The CD machines tend to run a bit hotter, but many people who are paranoid about temperatures seem to forget that they're well within published specifications.

3. Battery problems affected a few of the earliest machines, and Apple have pretty much fixed the problems by releasing a battery update via software update and have issued a recall for seriously problematic batteries (swelling, abnormally low capacity, etc.) and have provided free replacements.

Finally, since I actually have a CD MBP, I feel qualified in saying it's a fine machine. I'm very happy with mine. And once again, let us remind ourselves that this board is primarily for people to post about their problems in order to find a solution.

I too had qualms before I ordered mine (at that time they were on the refurb store) but was calmed with the fact, like everyone has said, most people here come with problems, the majority are fine. My CD 2.0 is FABULOUS. Doesn't get anything but warm to the touch, the fans barely are audible, they finally went on when I was playin a dvd while usin photoshop, dreamweaver, preview, printing app, ichat, adium, mail and surfing the web lol!

I find my machine just great, and the screen is terrific too. No icky grainy issues or anything of that matter.

Since you said your listing was on craigslist you will get a chance to see it and try it out first, so that's good as you can see any main problems that may jump out at you, and feel how hot it was getting. Mine runs cooler then most of the c2ds i've felt and I haven't had any problems. My bf has a cd 2.16 and his runs just great (we had to replace the battery as it was DOA but that was part of the recall before he got it [new in box on clearance] so it was replaced quickly... but once again you can check all this out)

Anyway.. a CD is a good cheap option to get a really powerful machine that will still last you for a whiel without having to shell out for a newer c2d. All versions come with their share of problems.. chances are though you will find yourself with a perfectly fine machine. I would check however if you could still add applecare to it (if it's still in it's first year, it should be) and check all that stuff out to make sure.

GOOD LUCK!
