Upgraded from MSN messenger 3.5 to 4.0 yesterday, and all my contacts save two disappeared from my contact list.

Searched around on the forums and all over the internet, but can't seem to find anything. Anyone got a clue?

Extremely odd since your contacts should be stored on a server elsewhere. Maybe you should check if the same thing happens on another computer (maybe get your hands dirty on a PC), or you could try using Proteus x (http://www.proteusx.com). Proteus is much better BTW, it only nags you once in a while demanding that you pay a small fee.

That's the wierd thing. The list is there in Adium and on my IBM X40, so it seems to be an issue with MSN Messenger for Mac....

Then I'd just ditch the new MSN messenger client. There are sleeker alternatives out there. Like I mentioned earlier Proteus is a good option and it offers more than just MSN connectivity. I switched to that client because It'll combine other IM services in one client and it has a wider variety of gimmicks to make the experience more enjoyable. Especially the addressbook synchronisation.
That's as far as I can help there.

I'm using Adium as we speak, but was curious to hear what it might be that causes the problem.

Thanks for your time, though. I really appreciate people taking time to answer my questions. :)

I'm a new switcher - and MSN Messenger 4.0 annoys me that it keeps logging me out...
I can't see others pics (attached to their profiles) or display one anymore..
I can't do video chatting with my iSight - yet PC Messenger allows it...
sigh

can Adium see other users pics (in their profiles?) and allow you to add a self pic?

Yup, but they are displayed in front of their handles in the chatwindow and are tiny...

Yeah, use Adium - it rocks - and the guys release an updated version nearly every week!

Why is that a good thing? I mean; if you make a good product in the first place that means you won't have to update it in a long time, right?

Try throwing away the MSN Messenger prefs file.

Avoid Proteus - it deleted half my contact list. It actually deleted it off the server, so I had to remember who was on my list and add them again :(

I have been using amsn for sometime as an alternative to MSN Messenger. I have had no problems with it, file transfers have been working fine, and it supports display pictures at normal size.
