Dear MR Web Folks,

Safari won't properly play the h.264 clips on my website. They play fine on Firefox. You can check it out here.

I encoded these clips using Quicktime. I opened each DV 720x480 clip in Quicktime and then exported them to H.264 320x240, AAC Stereo 44.1 Khz, 29.97 frames per second, 361 kb/s. Any tips on how to tweak these settings so Safari will play them right would be great.

Cheers,
Justin

Problems with h.264 playing on safari

FYI, my version of Safari is "Version 3.1 (4525.13)"

The movies play perfectly on my powerbook 1 ghz in safari 3.1.1 on leopard 10.5.2 and whatever the latest quicktime is. Are you sure your software is all up to date?

Motu,

That's great it's playing fine on your setup. I could care less if it played on mine. I just don't want potential clients to not be able to see it. I'll probably just encode it in flash and wmv as well and give folks those options.

My setup is a little old and cranky. Old G4, dual 500, OS 10.4.11, just updated Safari to 3.1.1. I'm a little loathe to get Leopard and update everything else. My FCP is working with this configuration and I don't want to screw it up by upgrading one thing or another. I'm going to wait till I get a new iBook or iMac.

Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it.

Cheers,
Justin

No problem. You might wanna get feedback from a couple of other people first, because if you figure that it works just based on my single anecdotal experience then you my be setting yourself up for trouble. Try to get at least a few more people to confirm that it play well on their different setups and that should give you reasonable confidence.

EDIT: And good call on the not upgrading. IMO, the wisest upgrade philosophy is to not upgrade if your system does everything that you want it to do.

Not seeing any issue here, though I'm on a fully-updated Leopard install as well. Plays fine in Camino, too, though not a surprise if Firefox works.

I can't say I see any reason why that video should have any problem on any browser, though--you don't seem to be doing anything unusual. Maybe just a Safari glitch on your particular setup?

Incidentally, when did Safari add the dark grey background when playing QT videos in the browser window? Is that a v3.1 addition?
