Problems with large files Mac Pro 10.6

I have co-workers trying to open large image files 1.2GB+ and are having trouble with the programs crashing, they said they need to be this large because they are images for very large signed and need really high resolutions.

anyway, he was trying to open a very large .eps file with illustrator and the program just quit, no error message or crash report. another coworker was trying to open a similarly large file with quark, and got the crash report:

both computers have 16GB of Ram, they were asking me if they needed more, however I don't think so, I checked the actiivty monitor while this was happening, it was only using 2.5GB of RAM for the program so there was still plenty left.

What could be causing these problems?

What does photoshop have to say about this?

Sounds like the image is just too big for them....

Could not open it in Photoshop either. He also said he can open it on his home computer (which is where the image was created in the first place), and if he made the image slightly smaller, he was able to open it. Here is his home computer specs

Are all the applications fully updated? The OS on the problem machines has at least one update to run- a supplemental update for 10.6.8. I'd apply all OS and application updates and test again. Admittedly I'm stabbing in the dark, but there isn't enough of a crash log to show anything useful, and it's not impossible that the log doesn't have anything useful in it anyway.

as far as the crash log, that was a different computer, she said she re-saved the original file with a different name and then converted to Quark again and it opened. So something weird happened there

My view

After confirming that all software updates (including 'security updates') are carried out, I would verify the file by carrying out the following:

1. System Preferences to create a new Test user on the machine
2. Log into the new user and try open the file (Photoshop etc should still work)
3. See how you progress.

Failing that, I would back up the machine and carry out the 10.6.8 combo update on the boot HDD while running off another machine (i.e. Target FireWire disk mode)

Failing that, I would back up the machine and carry out an archive and install of 10.6

Failing that, erase, install & update 10.6.

WAG - 32 bit vs 64 bit?

Is 10.6 loading the 64-bit kernel? Perhaps try booting it with the keys "6" and "4" held down during the startup chime to ensure it is indeed booting in 64-bit. I don't know that would make a difference, but seeing as the other two that are opening the file are running 10.7 which tries to run 64 by default, this could perhaps be a problem. I would think it is worth a try.

what are the specs of the file itself? RGB color mode or CMYK color mode? is this a TIFF, JPEG, PSD? what's the DPI and resolution?

have you tried increasing your scratch and cache settings in Photoshop? also, try saving it as a "Large Document Format" Photoshop file, .PSB and see if that helps.
