problems with linksys router, devices, and ip address

I have about 6 devices using my router

3 iphone (wireless)
1 mac (wireless)
1 pc (wired)
1 ps3 (wireless)

Everytime i log on to one of these devices it drops all other devices from the wifi network.

Do i have to give out ip address or assign them? i'm using a WRT54G linksys router.

The WRT54G should be able to assign addresses to each device. If you've manually assigned them all the same IP address, it could easily cause the kind of conflict you described.

Or your router might be bad/dying.

WRT54's were not known for their stability, capabilities and weren't exactly a top line router but they should serve their basic purpose if you have the latest Linksys firmware installed.

Check all the basics and make sure there is enough dhcp addresses, basic things like that. If you have all your settings written down you may want to do a reset to set it all back to the defaults and start from scratch. To reset hold down the reset button while powering on, holding for 30 seconds. This will set everything back to factory defaults including the login password.

Another thing you can do is download dd-wrt firmware and make that router better than Linksys ever intended it to be. dd-wrt give you a lot more to tweak but even if you dont use all the bells and whistles there are some basic things like being able to turn down the transmit power, for security, or crank it way up for range like its never been able to do.

If you end up flashing it with the latest Linksys firmware or with dd-wrt, be sure to follow to the instructions closely otherwise you risk turning your router into a brick.
