I bought a Macpro 2019 in March of that year. Recently I have had problems with doing the updates . The last few updates will not install..I think one is the latest os... I am also while working on my mac getting a black screen (quicks working) and shut the lid and then press the button to I guess restart. This is kind of hard to explain. I know the power is ok . I went to log and it mentions SIGKILL.
What could be the problem? I notice on the web that 2019-20 have had problems .

I'm sorry you are having problems with your MBP. Here's a fix that might work.

Here's my understanding of your problem: Your MBP from 2019 is crashing, and you're attempting to do a software update to fix the issue, but it will not install.

I'd recommend creating a bootable USB of Catalina or Big Sur (hold off on Monterey until it's fully fixed) and fully reinstalling macOS.

There are two ways to download a macOS full installer:
1. Download the macOS installer off the App Store (really goes to Software Update Preferences)
2. Use softwareupdate --list-full-installer and softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version <desired version>

Once you have a macOS version downloaded, you can use createinstallmedia to create a bootable USB drive.

Then, boot into Recovery and erase the ENTIRE SSD - the "Apple SSD" in Disk Utility, and reinstall the version of macOS you created the USB drive for.

Please let me know if this works or if you need any more help.

Probably I could have explained my problem better. My son in law worked on my Mac Pro 13 touch . Here is what he texted me while working on it.
I got Catalina 10.15.5 installed. There’s an update for 10.15.7 that runs but won’t finish writing itself when the laptop reboots, a bunch of people in 2019 & 2020 had the same issue and there really wasn’t an easy fix. It was either reinstall the OS or get lucky. You can skip the update and install Monterey which I did about 8 times but it does the exact same thing. I get it to download, install, reboot but then doesn’t write the final process. I’ve repaired the disc, installed in Safe mode, downloaded the OS from different sites and nothing works. I would just work with Catalina unless it causes any issues .
I hope this explains the problem better.
I wonder if anyone else has had this issue .

It sounds like your son-in-law repaired the disk, but didn't erase it. I'd recommend erasing it, and reinstall macOS, then hopefully it will work without issue.

That's what I can think of at the moment - other people might have better/easier fixes.

Does this mean reinstall everything when I first bought the Mac Pro? the macOS that first came with my Mac?

You COULD do that (reinstall OS that came with your Mac) with Internet Recovery if you want (Option + Shift + Cmd + R on boot. OR you could create a USB installer of a different version with createinstallmedia, it's up to you. But in the end, it should have a fresh installation of macOS.

Let me know if this works.

I noticed on the log that I am getting a lot of sigkill . What does this mean?

From a quick Google search, it looks like sigkill is a "communication" in "Unix or Unix-like operating systems like Linux to immediately terminate a process" (macOS is a Unix-like OS).

So what I think this means from my small amount of research is that some process is being forced to terminate because of some error.

It also says that sigkill is the equivalent of pressing Ctrl + C while running a command.

I've attached a demo of SOMETHING LIKE what is happening.


I'd just let it run and not worry about it for now. Let me know if you run into any more issues during installation.

Also, which version of macOS are you trying to install? Because the version you are trying to install might be having problems.

macOS catalina 10.15.7. Monterey 12.2.1 are the updates that will not finish the installing . Keep getting error messages. The Catalina before the 10.15.7 was successfully updated.
I have enough storage .

This is SO strange. When you went to (try to) install Monterey, you made sure to wipe the ENTIRE SSD, yes?

What specific error messages are you getting? I know you mentioned that sigkill kept popping up in the log, but that was only during the "preparing" phase - the log can't be accessed during the actual installation (Apple logo with progress bar).

Have you tried Internet Recovery with the OLDEST SUPPORTED VERSION (Shift + Opt + Cmd + R on boot)?

Another thing you could try is to install the macOS on an external drive (either a spinning drive or SSD will work). Maybe your SSD is failing.

at the latest Catalina on my Mac is Catalina 10.15.7. There is a newer update. I was wrong above.

Ok, I apologize for not initially understanding, thanks for clarifying.

So what I gather is that you're fine using Catalina for now, because updating it will cause issues. From our initial correspondence I had thought the drive was wiped, which was very stupid of me.

So to me it seems like your MacBook Pro is functioning fine under 10.15.7. Am I correct on this?

By the way, from what I gather from the log, the computer could not find a critical system file and thus executed sigkill.

I am not very good at decoding logs, so that's the farthest I can go on that front.

I sincerely hope I'm accurate on this...

So far for the past week it seems to be working alright. IT still will not update . Even my ouch bar is working a lot better I have not had a black screen while looking and researching on my Mac .
