Problems with new iMac

Well, most of these problems aren't directly related to the computer itself, but after my second consecutive visit to the apple store, they recomended me to bring my entire machine into the sotre so they can see if anything major is wrong.

My maching is a iMac 20" C2D (see sig) and since it has come into my home last friday there have been a few problems.

1. The Wireless Mighty Mouse's Right Click doesn't work. (It works, but it have to click it 30 times before the right click window will come up)

2. I purchased Airport Express, and after doing everything correctly, it still doesn't work with jack (flashing amber). I have since then got a replacement, but have had the same problems. One thing that worrys me is that my computer recognizes that there is an Airport in my house, and says that I have full signal, but I cannot go on the internet.

3. I downloaded Google Earth (one of my favorite applications) and after a minute of using it it randomly closes. Other C2D owners claimed they had the same problem.

The one that worrys me the most is the Airport problem. I will call up Apple and see if they can find a fix but if not I will be forced to bring it to the Apple Store. What a crappy first mac experience. Anyone have any input on the Airport problem? All help is greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your first Mac experience. It is not typical, but can happen.

As far as the airport thing goes- give us more info as to your internet service method/provider, how you have it hooked up into a modem, etc. That will be necessary for someone (more capable than me) to help you fix it.

all I can say is be patient...with the Mac experience as well as this web site- someone will most likely fix all your troubles within a very short time. This is an amazing web site and usually troubles can be fixed faster on through this web site than callin' Apple direct!

Im sorry but im not seeing how any of those problems are directly related to your imac? Maybe the last one, but it sounds more like a problem with the app and maybe the version compatibility?

If you read Zwhaler's post it actually says what you just said- while they are not directly related it is his/her first mac computer and he/she has problems.

1) Has your right mouse button been configured in System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse? (eg. change the selection in the drop down menu pointing to the right side of the mouse to "Secondary Button"?)

2) This might be part of your AirPort problem: Mac OS X 10.4.8: AirPort does not auto-connect to existing networks after restart or wake from sleep In addition to this article I actually had to go into my Keychain and delete my wireless network key to get my WPA2 connection to work properly. Try deleting your wireless key in Keychain, then follow the support article instructions.

3) I don't know what to tell you about Google Earth, works fine on my iMac.

I bet I know what's causing the mighty mouse issue- it's a feature of every mighty mouse, and I hate it but we've gotta deal:

To right click, you must LIFT your finger off of the left click and then right-click. It's touch sensitive.

Regarding the mighty mouse, it is configured to have the right click being the secondary mouse button. Like I said, it works, but I have to click it tons of time before it actually works. In fact, it has stopped working altogether lately.

Regarding the Airport, my ISP is AT&T + Yahoo DSL and I have the Pro package, which means my connection speed is 3 MBPs. I am hooked up currently directly (wired) through the DSL Modem. As I said before, my main goal is to get it to become wireless through the Airport Express. I heard that sometimes resetting the Airport and also sometimes leaving it off for awhile and turning it back on will fix the problem. I tried both with no results.

And finally about Google Earth, I am currently running 10.4.8 and on top of that the people at the Apple Store don't know anything about it but from what I told them they believe that a software update or patch from Google will fix it.

Oh yeah one more thing I forgot to mention. This isn't a problem, but it's more like an annoyance. About every 30 minutes or so, I get a message saying:

"This is your reminder that you are still connected to the internet. Would you like to Disconnect, or Stay Connected"

Is there any way to make that go away? It's really bugging me.

I am sorry to say I don't. I am also sorry to say you would get all your questions answered quickly. I am unsure why no one is responding...usually answers are had within hours and sometimes minutes. You might try posting a more specific thread from scratch about the issues remaining. Be sure to be specific in the title- ie. wireless issue..." That seems to improve your chances of getting a good response.

sometimes when there are threads with titles such as yours it is a troll just trying to say bad things about Macs so I think many great minds tend to stay away from those types of threads.

My only idea for the internet connection issue would be some sort of security setting that is set to disconnect if not used after __ minutes??? But I have not found anything on my mac that would have that type of setting...is there any software on your computer specific to the internet connection or dsl modem? Doubt it but worth a try.

Good news. I spent 50 minutes yesterday talking to someone at apple. She couldn't figure out the problem (with the airport), and reffered me to a problem specialist. That guy kicked ass and in 10 minutes it was working fine. And the annoying "do you want to stay connected message" doesn't happen anymore. So all is good.

Also, was the mouse just defective?

...were you trying to connect wirelessly at all to the airport with the iMac or were you always trying a wired connection?

And were you able to get a patch for the google issue?

The problem with the AirPort was (remember it's fixed now) that my computer detected the airport and said I had full signal, but I could not connect to the internet. Some guy named Paco guided me through setting up the airport and it all works.

I was initally using a wired connection but then went (and am) wireless.

Yes the mouse is defective. I am using it now and Apple has ordered one to the store and will notify me when it arrives.

And I havn't tried Google Earth for awhile, but I assume it doesn't work. In fact, I am going to try it again right now.

EDIT: Sure enough, and as expected, Google Earth is having the same problems. Can someone give me a link to a download page for Google Earth version 3.1, I head it will work on C2D iMacs.

What version do you have- I see they have a beta 4...then the other one is at this link...there may not be a patch- maybe they just have you reinstall the latest?? I am installing it right now as I have never gotten around to doing it.

With DSL, at least Verizon, you have to set the modem to bridge mode to use it with a wireless router. Then set up the router to use PPPoE with username and password.

Was that the solution to the airport problem?

The AirPort was simply not set up, but for some reason the CD and my computer didn't have the program that is used to set up the air port, so good ol' Paco guided me and I ended up with a working airport!

About google earth, the latest version 4 (beta) is the one that doesn't work, which is why I am looking for (and so far without luck) for a 3.1 download.
