I went to check and update my wife's iMac and after trying to install Big Sur I get a message that my storage is full. I'm thinking "hell, this machine is only a few months old and it's 1tb, what could be on it". Well, I found out. Turns out photos is storing full Rez photos despite the optimization choice being checked off. There's about 800gb of photos. I have 4 tb of iCloud storage so there's plenty of room to store them in the cloud, but the thing isn't doing that. I'm thinking the only thing I can do is make sure everything she needs is in the cloud and just wipe the thing and start again, but that's pretty extreme and something I'd rather avoid. Does anyone have a solution for this? We have about the same size photo library but my is optimizing fine. Is there a way to force a swap, delete the photo library and use iCloud to rebuild it, or anything I can do other than wiping her machine and starting again? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Buy a large USB3 EXTERNAL drive, and keep your photos library on that, instead of on the internal drive...
