Problems with USB after upgrade

Hi all,
I upgraded to el cap some weeks ago and ever since, I have experienced problems with the usb-connection:
- I have to plug and unplug my iPhone several times.
- speakers have to be turned off and on, not recognized immediately.
- usb-keyboard looses it connection every time removed.

Is this a known issue?

I am on a late 2011 MBP.

Do you use a USB hub at all?
If so, how many ports on it?

The problem is the same, with and without usb-hub.

I assume you are on 10.11.3?

I upgraded to that version from Yosemite and had a number of USB issues with Audio devices (USB DAC to speakers, Blue Yeti Microphone). I also had some initial USB drive issues which seemed to clear up quite quickly.

I did the 10.11.4 update a couple of days ago as the release notes said some USB Audio problems had been addressed and my problem with the Blue Yeti microphone seem to be resolved. Haven't bothered putting the USB DAC to speakers back on the system yet. So it seems to me that some work has been done on the USB sub-system.

If you're on 10.11.4 then I had the same issue. Ended up doing a clean install and that fixed the problem.

As a n00b here, I'd like to weigh in as well with USB recognition problems since the upgrade to 10.11.4. I have a MacbookAir with 2xUSB slots. The one on the right is fine, the one on the left allows power for charging devices but doesn't recognise them as connected via Finder or other apps. There was something in the upgrade notes about USB support but it seemed related to audio devices. I'm now a USB slot down, and using hubs often results in odd behaviour and is my last resort.

I've connected my Kindle to it, and an 8GB Pivot memory stick and they no longer get recognised. Plugging them into the other slot works just fine. Anyone else having this kind of problem?

Yup, I did as well (as stated above). I had to do a clean install to fix the issue.

fongyuen, will it do with a clean install and then a recover from time capsule? It seems to me that apple has set up the time capsule intelligently so it does not erase newer system files but only the ones with personal information.

Or is there another workaround, something that cam be deleted?

yup, that's the way to go. Before the update I backed everything up on time machine and then after the upgrade I discovered I had the usb problem. So I did a clean install with 10.11.0, did the combo upgrade, then migrated everything back from the time machine back up and both usb slots are working again.

I did what he suggested and the port now recognises my Pivot USB, my other memory stick and will charge my iPhone again, loading iTunes, etc, etc.

I would recommend that you try this before embarking upon the uber-tech option: it may save you some time and heartache.

That's true, I should've thought of resetting the pram, thanks for the update.
