I currently own a 2010 single chip Mac Pro, in which I replaced the stock CPU with an Intel i7 980x chip. The upgrade was fast, easy, and worked out great.

My question is relative to the 2010 DP models, that have the dual 2.4GHz quads in them. Could I swap those out, and replace them with a couple of 980x chips too? Would there be any particualr hassles are potential issues in doing this (besides swapping out the RAM for non-ECC)?

Thanks in advance for any input here....

In a dual processor setup, the processors need to have double QPI.

Only some Xeon models have that.

So, desktop CPU's (like 980) will not work in such a setup.

Maybe I would go with the 5670 chips then..
