Procreate storage?

I'm trying to decide if 64gb is enough for me when buying the iPad Pro.

I used to draw a lot when I was younger and I'm planning on buying Procreate so I can live out my creative side again, but on digital. However, I don't plan on becoming an artist. It's just something I enjoy doing in my spare time. How much space does each file take up? For instance, a detailed b/w drawing of a human or a fully colorized painting of the nature with many details. I dont wanna feel limited to only having room for 50 drawings... any heavy Procreate user that can inform me how much storage it takes up with 150+ paintings?

Im really disappointed that there's no 128GB version. I think that wouldve been ideal.

I went with the 64GB version based on my personal usage with a previous iPad 3 and also my iPhone. However, if you're planning on using Procreate and other apps that consume space, then paying for the next size (256GB) may be worth it. I too would have preferred if Apple had made a 128GB version.

I have Procreate installed and it has over 50 drawings with many layers.

Oh, thats not too bad. I was afraid one heavily layered file would be 300-800 mb. How come it's less on iCloud?

The files on the iPad include other things like tracing your steps back through a drawing/painting and any links to other apps.

So its not possible to just store everything in the cloud, i need to have a copy of it on the ipad too?

Only you can really answer that, it depends on how much stuff you need/want to store locally.

If all you want to do is store your own self-generated content, and don't plan on working much with video, 64 GB might be enough.

But if you want to also store a reasonable amount of media and/or work with video extensively i'd be shooting for more.

The 10.5" Pro "sweet spot" IMHO is the 256 GB model. Go to 512 GB and its quite a bit more expensive, but the amount of money vs. the additional storage you get if you can stretch to 256 GB isn't obscene IMHO.

All depends on your budget vs. your expected use case though. If ProCreate / Photo work is going to be the most data intensive thing you do with it, and you don't plan on running a heap of other apps, you'll probably be fine. So long as you don't plan to hold everything you create, permanently on the device.

Not everything is stored with Procreate.
Take brushes and swatches (palettes) for example:- You can download additional ones from members on the Procreate Forum web site.
These are added to Procreate on your iPad but not with the iCloud version.
For this what you should do is create a link to where all your brushes/swatches are stored so that you can re-add these if you ever change your iPad and want it to operate the same as before.
Personally I have a folder in iCloud named Procreate Additional Material. In here I place all my downloaded brushes and swatches etc.

I see... But can I move all my art projects away from the iPad and into the iCloud? I have never used my iCloud account to anything else besides the feature "Find my iPhone". I have used Dropbox and I own a personal cloud called "MyCloud" that runs through my own internet. It's a one-time pursued drive with 1TB where I can store all my files and keep my Mac and other devices clear of any files. However, the app for MyCloud looks tacky on the iPad. Does the iCloud work the same or more like a shortcut where if I delete the file from the device, it deletes it self from the iCloud and vice versa?

Dont forget when iOS 11 hits us very soon it will come with an app named 'Files'. This will allow you to choose any cloud service and add them to the Files app. All you would then do is after downloading the brushes or whatever, you then save the files using the Files app to your designated cloud service. iCloud only deletes files automatically if that file has either been deleted manually from within Procreate, or you had saved a copy of the file to your Photos app and then later you delete this file in the Photos app.

Cool! But what if i want to delete a file from Procreate but keep it in the cloud for various reasons such as clearing up space on iPad or buy another iPad in the future, what then? im sorry if i ask too much, lol.

No problem Tina. All you have to do is this:-
Whilst in Procreate go to the thumbnail of your drawing and swipe from right to left on the thumbnail. This then brings up a window where you can select 'Share'.
Once you have done this a new window comes up and all you do is select where you want to share the file too. This can be any cloud storage of your choice. I have several and have Procreate drawings stored in icloud, Dropbox, GDrive, etc.

You can bring these back into Procreate later if you wish by using the 'Import' feature.

Personally I just let the daily backup to iTunes backup all my files drawings paintings.
It doesn't use up much space as I mentioned earlier.
When you then get a new iPad you just select Restore and all your previous files settings apps etc from your old iPad are transferred direct to the new iPad.
