Sorry guys, been out of the game awhile and can't think of what I used to rip my DVD's with before I sent them through Handbrake. I am trying to rip straight from Handbrake and it's taking forever for it to even just scan the source (literally 5-6 minutes for a dvd) and since it's reading straight from the optical drive instead the harddrive, speeds are slower. What is the "accepted" program for OSX to rip the Video_TS first prior to handbrake (free please). Thanks, and sorry if this is an easy question. I did try searching a bit first.

I have RipIt and Mac DVD ripper pro ( or something named like that ) that I bought in software bundles. Between the two of them, I haven't found something that I could not rip.
I trust RipIt bc I have been using it longer but it couldn't rip a unprotected DVD-r made by a local company for my Super 8mm film transferred to DVD. Probably created from an all-in-one machine or something.
The whole private forums and "donation" issues with Mac The Ripper made me move on....
I literally do a one click RipIt copy to .dvdmedia file and then use that in Handbrake.
When I want to shrink a large DVD to a single layer disc, I use DVD2OneX since they were one of the first apps since 2003 or 2004. I also have a copy of DVD Remaster Pro from another bundle that does the same things as DVD2oneX and handbrake, but I prefer the later two apps since the are popular and have great support forums.
I think RipIt has beta support for bulit in handbrake, so it's a one stop app, but I prefer the handbrake interface since I've been using it for years.
Yes, RipIt does have support for Handbrake built in.
I used RipIt to copy all of our purchased DVDs into iTunes so the kids can watch them with the iPad or through the Apple TV.
It's worked on all the DVDs I tried.
RipIt has been awesome, it has worked flawlessly! Even some disks that couldn't be ripped by anything else were ripped without issue. Not always the fastest method of ripping, but very reliable.

The software itself is very good but also, the developer is a great guy and highly responsive. I found a minor bug with the software related to post conversion metadata and the developer worked with me in a very responsive and tireless manner to fix the issue. It can also rip the main movie only, something RipIt cannot do, and it saves a lot of time.
