Programs Quitting when opening a file or importing/exporting

Hey guys, new to this and new to Macs. I have an eMac G4 now for about 6 months. Recently the thing was buggered and so I sent it off to be fixed. The darn Mac was never loading. They changed the CRT and put in a new power button. However, now whenever I open a program such as FinalCut pro or DVD player things go wrong. The program loads fine, but say I wanted to open a DVD or Open a project in FCP or import files or save a project the program unexpectidly quits. And the same pretty much happens with all the other programs I messed with. Anytime I want to open a file for that Program it will quit.

Has anyone encountered this problem before? The Mac FAQ's on their website are useless because they all offer tips for individual programs, but it's pretty much all of them, which can't make the problem isolated to one program. I feel quite gutted because it had just come back from repair and well now I still can't use it.

What do you mean by the programs you messed with? Did you try to do any DIY maintenance on this eMac either in terms of hardware or software? If so, what did you do?

Have you added any third party RAM? Have you added any third party theme-changing software?

Also, who fixed the eMac? Did you send it to Apple or a reseller. If they didn't solve the problems you outlined to them, they should have to take it back and try again. Assuming it's new, you still have another six months warrantee at least anyway.

If the whole system is playing up and you want a quick fix, I recommend backing everything up and reinstalling the OS.

Hi, when I say messed with it I mean I experimented with them to see if they were also quitting when I tried to open one of their files.

The eMac was fixed by a company called Scotsys. I have a three year warranty on the thing. It was fixed under a warranty repair. They solved the problem that I had outlined, which was the computer wasn't booting up.

I've never done any DIY maintenance on this myself. I am more accustomed PC's, but I wouldn't even try DIY maintenance on that myself. I have not done anything to the Mac as far as adding new hardware goes.

What's theme-changing software? Well the fact I don't know what it is probably means I have not addd it. Only software I've added is FinalCut Pro as that was my main purpose of buying the Mac so I could use it for editing.

I'm not sure that this is your problem, it certainly shouldn't be, but do you have enough RAM? How much do you have?

Also, if possible, have Activity Monitor running in the background while you open FCP and see if any one process takes up an extraordinarily large amount of your resources (CPU and/or RAM).

As for third party theme changer apps, I'm guessing you don't have any. They're simply little apps that change the appearance of OSX and can sometimes unintentionally mess with some of the internals of OSX, causing problems similar to this.
