Just wondering if you guys can help.

I have a MacBook Air 2018 8gb ram with 128 SSD

For some reason ever since I installed Catalina I get a grey bar when ever I log into my laptop after I enter my password.

Is this normal and if not how can it be fixed? I have attached a photo of what I mean.

Many thanks

It's normal, I believe it is showing the progress of FileVault decrypting the system. I see the same on my 2019 MBA with Catalina.

That’s good news thanks for the quick reply.

Do you think it’s safe to turn off FileVault and would that stop the progress bar from appearing, just a question out of interest.

FileVault is an extra level of security for your machine. I've always had FileVault enabled.. so I'm not sure if turning it off will remove the progress bar. If I remember correctly the progress bar was also there in Mojave with FileVault enabled.

that is a normal progress bar that will show after after any/every reboot.
it doesn't show if you are just waking yr machine after a sleep.

Yes, the progress bar is the drive decrypting (unlocking). Turning FV off will remove it...once the drive fully completed the process, which runs in the background until complete. There will be a one-time progress bar inside the System Pref/Security & Privacy/File Vault pane that will show the progress of the removal process...once you you turn FV off.
