i want to use an online tunnling software, for online gaming, called xlink kai. i have used it before with routers, crosovers, and cat5s. now i am completely wifi. i have learned that my card has to be capable of being in promiscuous mode.

QUESTION;
is my airport card (w/ apxpress wifi rtr) capable of going in promiscuous mode?

Since it could be very, very, VERY illegal to do (I'm not sure about laws, but I know you can steal CC#s or something at a starbucks or something), I'm just going to say google it.

Ethereal is a good packet analyzer for Mac or any unixes for that matter. I used it for my networks class in college.

I don't think the Airport Extreme supports promiscuous mode. I recall reading docs on Kismet awhile back and you couldn't do it then. Things may have changed though. I read up on their docs to confirm.

From that, it appears the Airport Extreme still won't go into promiscuous mode.

When you say you want to use it for Kai, are you talking about using it with a PSP, or regular consoles like xbox and playstation?

I use my airport extreme card to play my xbox and ps2 online through the mac kai software, but have not got a PSP, so have no idea if it's possible or not, i would imagine if this is your only wireless use, you could get hold of an old airport card, and replace it with the airport extreme card you currently have because afik PSP is 802.11b that would probably work

hmm, well to set it straight, im not trying to do anything ilegal, thanx for the concern. just wana play some games, that i own, on my wifi network and on the internet over a legit tuneling service.
i use xbox.
i cant stick a nic or anything in my mac thats going to limit preformance elsewere and physically prodrude out the side... to much bull **** and money. i already just droped 100 bucks on the wifi xbox card. it seems a real shame that with the advanced in tech and ability i would have to invest more and downgrade just to free up,... but not really. the hole point is to simplify.

The AP isn't concerned with promiscuous mode of the wireless card. So, changing AP settings won't make a difference.

are you saying that its my router that needs to be capable of promiscuous mode? i thought it was the card/ so that i can see(on my pb) everything thats happening on my network.

No, the router isn't what I was referring to. You are correct that the card is what needs to support promiscuous mode.

I was referencing your question to tobio about turning off 802.11g compatibility on your router. Changing that compatibility aspect does not change the fact that the AE card cannot be put into promiscuous mode.

intercepting wifi traffic is grey area, but basically so far its still legal as long as you-

A.) dont decrypt encrypted packets
B.) dont joint protected/encrypted networks

anything broadcast unencrypted is fair game.

as stated above, 802.11b also known as original airport supports promiscuous mode because the cards were based on the common Hermes chipset.

802.11g or airport extreme cards are not capable of promiscuous mode because they use a Broadcom chipset, and dispite a huge petition Broadcom will not open some of the driver code so a capable driver can be written.
