I have a 2019 Mac Pro 7,1 with a Promise Pegasus J2i installed. It has a 12TB WD drive in the #1 position and a 14TB WD drive in the #2 position. It uses version 11.4 of Big Sur.

Yesterday the 12TB drive disappeared after 6 months or more of operating normally. First I tried to find it using Disk Utility. No joy; it didn't show up at all. So I removed the drive and tested it using another computer and the drive checked out fine.

I reinstalled the drive in the Mac Pro making sure all the cables were snug and now the drive works as before - no problem.

Could this have been caused by a loose cable connection? Anyone else have this (or something similar) happen with their Promise Pegasus J2i?

The Pegasus is just a cage. The problem would have to be cable or drive related. I'm betting a cable issue.

Lou,

I agree with you about it being the cable. I'll try to get in touch with Pegasus to see if they have any advice. Wish me luck ;)

Well, here's the reply from Promise's support:

It may be caused by loose cable connection, suggest you to monitor it. If issue continue,
please reach us through support.promise.com to assist you.

So I guess I'll keep an eye on it. If it recurs I'll request a replacement cable.

No issue with my J2i for over a year now. Both drives (the stock supplied and a Samsung 4TB SSD in the other) used for Archive and Time Machine haven't disappeared so far.

Two month update: drive still working fine - no hiccups. The loose cable theory seems to be upheld. Reseating the cable looks like it worked.
