I had to switch to larger disks within my Pegasus RAID device as I was running out of space. I have setup my logical drive (RAID 6) and now I am waiting to complete synchronisation. As I am using 12TB drives, I am sitting here 3 hours and only 1% has been completed. Newest firmware is installed.
Once I bought the device, I had plenty of time to wait the task to complete. But now, I don't have time to wait a week to get the logical volume synchronised.
I ask myself, if any data written (while disk synchronisation is not yet complete) is already protected by parity information. The official documentation states
Reading that I would assume that parity information is not yet completed, i.e. if a drive fails during synchronisation, any my data is lost. However, the whole documentation does not give a warning not to use the device until synchronisation is finished. It just says that I/O is affected until the task is completed.
So, to make my question simple: do I have to wait until synchronisation is finished before writing data to the disk array and profit from RAID6 redundancy or is parity information automatically being created while writing to files to file system? It may come out that one of the bought disks fail due to harsh transportation.

Synchronization is automatically applied to logical drives when they are created. Synchronization recalculates the redundancy data to ensure that the working data on the physical drives is properly in sync.
