ProMotion - Not Seeing any Difference on YouTube

Is it the crummy video resolution on YouTube? I bought this for my wife yesterday, and do NOT have the settings set to limit to 60 Hz, so I was expecting smoother videos. But honestly they just look the same.

Under what circumstances am I going to notice the 120Hz and be blown away?

Never honestly lol, you'll only see it when sweeping the app pages and opening and closing apps. Also scrolling the internet, that's it

You also see it when drawing with the Apple Pencil. The faster refresh rate is responsible for reduced latency with the Pencil on the 2nd Generation iPad Pros.

You really don't want that on video anyway - if you have it enabled on your TV (it'll probably have a name with "motion" in it) you should switch it off.

Videos are still the same frame rate, so you won’t see a difference.

If the video is only 60 FPS/60 Hz, then it will not magically make the video higher frame rate on a faster monitor. Think of a low resolution image, will it be suddenly sharper on a higher resolution monitor?

This feature is only for things that exist at 120 FPS, so until YouTube starts offering 120 Hz you won't see a difference. Since you can record slow motion video, you should be able to see the difference if played at normal speed.

There are methods to create extra frames to simulate a higher frame rate, but it is difficult to say how many people would prefer the result. Since it is energy intensive to convert video in this way, its unlikely to ever happen on a portable device as the battery life could easily become halved or worse.

Scrolling, swiping, Apple Pencil and such are the main things for promotion. Videos, other than recording by the cameras slow motion— isn’t 120hz (on the iPad), especially with YouTube, so you won’t see a difference there.

You can take a video with the slow motion which is a massive difference between 30 FPS and 120 FPS.

There are some apps like the Skyguide app that supports it as well, which makes it REALLY smooth when you look around with the iPad.

Promotion is actually a lot more noticeable in stuff due to the lower input lag than it is for the visuals. The same can be said for my 144hz PC monitor.

Yup! Otherwise you’ll have that “soap opera” effect, and games have a lot more input lag due to each frame being showed twice to artificially make it smoother. I couldn’t stand it on when my family got an LG OLED as it was on by default, had to turn it off straight away.

It is not "upscaling" 60 hz/fps content to 120hz so you will see it in menus, apps and games that go above 60 fps etc.
