Other ProMotion on the next iPhone (2018)?

It’s the one thing I’m hoping for and would 100% make me upgrade with zero hesitation. There hasn’t been many rumours about it though unfortunately which makes me think it won’t be included. Then again, we didn’t know about ProMotion before the iPad Pros were launched last year so maybe it’s one of those things that can’t be detected by the rumour mill? Also, we first had True Tone displays which was initially an iPad-only feature a couple of years ago until it was then brought to the iPhones a year later just last year, so maybe they will do the same with ProMotion by bringing that feature which is currently exclusive to iPad Pros to the iPhone models this year? Gives me some hope.

True Tone was also exclusive to the 2016 iPad Pro until it was brought to iPhones a year later with the X and 8 models. With that in mind, it’s not improbable to suggest the same may be true for ProMotion (introduced exclusively to the iPad Pros last year) being brought over to the iPhone models this year.

True Tone and Promotion are not mutually exclusive features that you can compare. True tone is actually fairly simple feature that just alters the display to make it more comfortable for reading, it make sense that Apple would express that feature across different iOS products, as its just a dispay setting. Promotion made absolute sense to lessen the stutter on the iPad for refresh rates and responsiveness, Which was discusssd for years to reduce the lagginess. It possible _could_Apple introduce that to the iPhone? Maybe, but again; I highly doubt that.

And why would you highly doubt it? Why wouldn’t they want another iPad feature brought over to their iPhones if it reduces lag like you pointed out? I think that’s the next step towards improving their iPhone displays. There’s already the razor phone that runs at 120Hz and the recent Asia ROG which runs at 90Hz with an OLED display so things are heading in that direction anyway. It’s the next evolutional step in display technology which smartphones are already starting to adopt and I believe Apple kickstarted it with their iPad Pros.

Apple is the most unpredictable company in the world, they may or may not follow the trend of what any other tech manufacturer does in terms of implementing certain software hardware features. At minimum, I think it would have been reasonable if we have heard a rumor from a reliable insider, in which one we primarily have not.

I’m not saying I don’t welcome the idea of Promotion for the iPhone, I just question if Apple will conflate one feature from an iPad to the iPhone or vice versa. I could also make the same argument maybe they want Promotion to be exclusive the iPad Pro, as it really is a major selling feature for those who do appreciate it as an upgrade Over the base iPad models.

Well I don’t know why they wouldn’t want a feature that they introduced themselves brought over to their most popular product line seeing as that’s where all smartphones are heading anyway. I don’t know if OLED is capable of running at a 120Hz refresh rate yet so that may be an argument against it right now, but I disagree with you that they would leave it as an exclusive feature for the iPad. I remember the same being said about TrueTone and how it wouldn’t benefit a smaller screen. If the tech is currently possible then I don’t see why they wouldn’t. If it isn’t ready yet for OLED displays which may be what is holding them back then I can understand why they can’t.

OLED seems nothing more than a fantasy at this point, I don’t know that Apple even would have the manufacturers lined up to meet the demands for various iPad Pro models that support OLED, which I believe they will use LCD long as possible until micro LED is ready.

Yeah just forum members on this site. The average joe isn’t exactly going to care now. And I was talking about 120Hz being possible with the OLED iPhones, not iPads. It may be the reason why they have kept ProMotion exclusive to the iPad Pros as a 120Hz OLED iPhone display may not be possible yet. Anyway, only a month left to see what happens.

FTR, We weren’t discussing hardware, we were discussing software implementation between cross transfer of True-Tone, Being it is a *toggled* iOS feature.
 
What's the argument for having ProMotion on the iPhone? Other than, "iPad has it, so iPhone should get it"?

The main purpose of ProMotion is to reduce input lag from the Pencil. When iPhone is compatible with Pencil, then it would make sense to have ProMotion.

Typical video content being played on iPhone is 24, 30, or 60 FPS. Unless consumers are watching a lot of 120 FPS videos, adding ProMotion doesn't benefit many consumers.

Yeah I didn't get that from your response at all, but ok. :) True Tone is a hardware feature. It requires specific hardware to be able to toggle on/off the feature, so...

William, You’re repeating yourself, no need to rehash what you posted twice. Also, No one ever _didn't_ acknowledge that true tone isn’t hardware based, but the point of why I (And the other Member) said it’s a ‘software discussion’, is because it discussed the implementation of promotion and cross hatching between devices of how True Tone was used from the iPad and iPhone. There is the recap of what the Discussion was about since you needed to duplicate what you posted two times.

No need to repeat yourself. I understand what you were trying to say. You just didn’t say it in a clear/concise manner, which is why I felt the need to chime in and state that 1.) True Tone is not a “simple feature” and 2.) It is not just a display setting (like brightness or text size). It requires dedicated hardware, - oh look, I’m repeating myself. :)

In any case, it’s cleared up now. Carry on.

Browsing is smoother on 120hz. The animations and entire feel of the tablet is smoother on 120hz.

120 Hz means less motion blur when there is movement on screen (even for something as simple as scrolling in a browser) and smoother animations. The components that recognize touch input are already 120 Hz on the iPhone X to reduce input lag. A 120 Hz OLED screen is only a question of display manufacturers managing to make one.

I doubt the 2018 iPhone X has one but maybe the 2019 might.

While I would like pro motion on an iPhone and there are more benefits like faster and more fluid animations, better tracking of the finger when swiping and dragging. I do agree with you. Apple needed 120hz for the pen to work like they wanted. 60hz is fine on a phone and they won’t do 120 until it’s cheaper or if they get more benefits than just more fluid animations.

I believe the X samples touch input at 120hz already. The screen just can’t show it. You also need a device capable of pushing all those pixels at 120 FPS at all times.

A 7nm cpu might offset the power consumption required by the new GPU to do this but honestly I think if they did it, it might be an X Plus only feature, both to encourage people to go bigger (higher profits) but also with the traditionally larger battery it would be the most likely to accommodate of the 3.
 
So I have an iPad Pro and a 2017 MBP - the screen on the iPad seems noticeably nicer to me. I assume that's the promotion or 120 Mhz response rate? If so, one would think they'd want to extend that to all their devices.
