Just downloaded 18.2 on my iPad and decided to play with the proofreading in the Notes app and I’m mystified. Have tried it on 7 notes so far, all of which are lists rather than just plain text and it is just complete and utter garbage.
First off the interface is horrible - why all the colour changes and the sort of scrolling effect as it processes the text? Why not just have a progress bar in the proofreading dialog? Half way through the process and suddenly all the text will disappear from the note leaving a blank note for a few moments and then it will reappear. Sometimes there seems to be additional white text superimposed on top of the original - an interface defect.
Then come the results and it is just unusable. As I said the test notes are lists, so things like the contents of my freezer, where I am not particularly bothered about punctuation. Proofread will only ever punctuate about 10% of the list. So rather than just let proofread loose on the entire text I have just tried highlighting smaller sections and it then makes text changes that it ignored before with the whole list proofread but then misses out the punctuation. So with the same highlighted text I run the proofreading again in the hope that it will then somehow get to the punctuation, but no.
So is this still beta in 18.2? Am I just doing things all wrong? Does it just not work if the text is a list?
Tried the rewrite function and it does rewrite but is just horribly inconsistent.
For instance in my freezer contents note there will be something like the following:
Tesco diced onions, 386g of 500g left
Tesco broccoli, 521g of 900g left
Tesco cauliflower, 662g of 900g left
Tesco mushrooms, 262g of 500g left
Which if I highlight and rewrite each line changes to
Tesco diced onions, leaving 386g out of the 500g.
Tesco broccoli has 521 grams left out of a 900-gram package.
Tesco cauliflower has 662 grams left out of 900 grams.
Tesco mushrooms have 262 grams left out of a 500-gram pack.
At least it added the punctuation this time, but why is the rewrite different each time?
If I highlight the four lines and rewrite it changes to:
Tesco diced onions, with 386g left out of 500g.
Tesco broccoli, with 521g left out of 900g.
Tesco cauliflower, with 662g left out of 900g.
Tesco mushrooms, with 262g left out of 500g.
Now this is better, but why is this different from highlighting each line.
And if I try this on the whole list only some of it (about 10%) will change.
As I asked before, am I just doing something wrong here or is this still beta? because I honestly have never come across software from Apple as atrocious as this.
Anyways, rant over.
