I'm sure they'll be a tethering option shortly after its release. You're paying another bill whenever you need the service.
It's data that's good only on that device.

The biggest con is definitely paying for 3G service. If I can share my 3G data service from my iPhone with the iPad, then I will not hesitate one second on getting the 3G iPad.
price is the only con
One more thing about the AT&T data plan to consider, is the way the iPad constantly reloads webpages on Safari, I think that people will find that there is no other choice than to get the $30/month plan, and we all may be kidding ourselves thinking we could get away with $15 a month, unless it is only for checking email and other very light tasks.
For me, I can't bear to give AT&T another $30 on top of what I already pay for my iPhone. Here in NYC, to maintain my call integrity and not kill my phone battery, my 3G has been disabled for months and months now! I have wi-fi at home and at work, and when I'm out an about, the dreaded EDGE network delivers my email to me just fine, and I typically forego any web surfing unless I find an open wi-fi network somewhere!
For me it all came down to the "on the go" factor. I could have went with a wifi iPad, but I thought about the people I know that have an iPod Touch instead of an iPhone. Sure, wifi is available a lot of places, but there are tons of times I can use a 3G connection. In the car, somewhere they charge for wifi, power outage or internet outage at my house, and plenty of other places. On top of that there are a lot of apps that use an internet connection. If you are away from wifi, you are screwed out of these apps. I know people that have messaging apps like Ping on their iPod Touches and I constantly have reply issues with them because they are away from wifi and can't send or receive messages for hours or more. To me the $130 extra is worth the added connectivity and convenience.
Also, the fact that it is a non-contract 3G plan meaning I can cancel if I don't need it and restart when I do, makes it even better.
I'm not sure what benefit 3G will be except to be a $130 insurance policy. Of course, unlike insurance, if you use it, you have to pay out $15 or $30/mo.
Also the part cost $7, but there was also extra engineering expenses, testing expenses, and its unknown if Apple is actually paying ATT a subsidy to get the $30/unlimited/no contract deal. They sure don't offer that pricing to any other device.
If you are confident you won't use the 3g aspect, and if gps isn't crucial to you, of course you should get wifi only.
I know for sure that with my use pattern, 3g makes sense. I could tether my Nexus One, I've done that from time to time with a laptop, but then you're limited by the phone's battery. The iPad's battery life is a huge plus to me - maybe the device's #1 feature.
I view the 3G as "connection insurance" -- If I've don't have WiFi but I have to have connectivity, then I can buy service for the month. If I don't need it, I don't have to buy it.
I don't know, but I'd wager it's the opposite. Apple is far more likely to be getting a kickback from AT&T than paying a subsidy. Exclusivity is a pretty big deal. Remember that Verizon passed on the iPhone. AT&T definitely kicked back airtime income to Apple when the first iPhone launched. I would be surprised if that weren't the same with this.
True. But you'd have to admit it does take away from its sexiness since you can also see it on the top when viewing the screen. In a case... not an issue which is what I plan on doing as well anyway.
So I am actually pretty happy with my wifi ipad, but I can help but think it would be nice to have the benefits of 3g. At the same time I am wondering if it is really worth the 10% restocking fee I will incur, the extra $130 on top of that, and than the added cost of 3g. So I thought Id compile a list of pros and cons of the 3g ipad hoping that people can add to it.
Pros of 3g ipad
wireless connection when you need it
GPS chip
More versatile apps that would be able to take advantage of the GPS
Cons of 3g ipad
More of an expense
Ugly black bar across the back
lousy streaming video over 3g
Thats all I can come up with for now...Can anyone think of anything else?
