Protecting Baseband and Creating Restore point for jailbroken phone

Hello All,

If I go through these steps on an older 3GS curently running 3.0.1 with the 4.28.06 baseband, will I be able to restore with a custom firmware if something goes wrong with the phone later on? Basically Id like to know if I can restore my 3GS with a higher custom firmware without the SHSH (or BEC and iBSS) files for that os version.

1) Jailbreak at 3.0 using redsn0w 0.8

3) Create or obtain a hacktivated custom 3.1.2 firmware (pwntool created maybe?).

4) Shift-restore or command-restore to this custom 3.1.2 firmware.


Really want to avoid accidentally upgrading my baseband and having apple screw me over if I need to wipe and restore my phone later on.

Also if this will work, would anyone do me a huge favor and either point let me know where to find a custom firmware like this (on a PC so cant create it myself) either through PM or whatever?

No !

Without SHSH files, iTunes will not allow you to install any IPSW other than 3.1.3 to the 3GS.

So you been jb since 3.0.1 and still don't have your shsh's saved thru cydia? Did you click no when it asked you "Make my life easier"?
If not you won't be able to restore to custom firmware.
Just have to wait till something comes out in the future for 3GS models. At the moment nothing.
