Protecting my new SR Macbook Pro

Hi All,

Newbie Alert... Please don't flame me if this has already been asked before as I'm sure it has...

I've got my new Santa Rosa LED Macbook Pro but I've realised that it's not going to be long before I do some unintentional damage to it like scratch the aluminium case or scrape it against something. In addition I'm a little worried about keeping the LED screen and keyboard in as good a shape as possible. Finally I would like typing to be made as comfortable as possible.

Sooooo, I ask what is/are the best way(s) to protect the case, keyboard and screen of this sexy beast ? I'm open to one or more products which hopefully won't displease my wallet too much... Any recommendations ?

Best skin ever is a product many people recommend.

However I would (if I was in your position) go with a hard shell and a top skin. I do not know of any hard shell manufactures.
 
I keep mine in a Sling from Maccases.com and I also have a really well padded neoprene case, so it's double protected. I have the bag and then a soft case.

for the screen, some people use a felt screen cover to prevent keyboard intents,(a buddy of mine just uses the slip placed on the keyboard during shipping). I don't have any of these.

for cleaning iKlear or a similar product works wonders, keeps everything nice and shinny and keeps the screen clear of lint and dust.

I have 4 products to protect my MBP.

Crumpler 'The Slip' Laptop Screen Protector
Speck see-thru plastic shell
Booq Vyper M2 case

Finally a Swiss Gear back pack

I try my best to protect my MBP, I am starting to look at keyboard protectors next, especially after reading a previous thread on spillage over the keyboard.

Another vote for the Speck see-through case. It does not affect heat dissipation and takes the worry out of scratching your case. It also feels nicer to the touch than bare aluminium.

As for slip cases, the Zeroshock ones are the only slipcases I have tried which have given any real element of additional protection.
 
I ordered a Speck case $37 and iskin $18 key board cover. Both off of newegg. Best price I saw anywhere, plus they had it in stock. SpecK seems to be popular.

iSkins are on eBay for pretty cheap and seem to have an excellent reputation for protecting the KB while not changing its action.

I'm going to pick up an incase neoprene case from BestBuy since they carry them here in Canada, and then decide on the Speck seethru case after. There seems to be a lot of turmoil to do with the speck case at the moment...
 
Well, I am in Afghanistan, and so dust and moving around, I wanted something that had some protection from dust and scratches. I would have got a sleeve, which I still may, when I head back to the states. Not that I need anything, more so this is what I feel would best suit my situtation currently.

Ummm, what 'turmoil' are you referring to? The only negative that I've seen was a comment ON the company's website that mentions a previous manufacturing run on the units had a very minor flaw in the fit with the top part 'clicking' against the lower part when opened. The flaw has been fixed in the manufacturing cycle and if you have a flawed unit a simple 1 minute job with a nail file corrects the problem (fix posted on their website).

Actually I've been on lots of forums reading about it and have spoken to a few people first hand who have the case. They all agree that the mod wasn't a huge deal to do. The problem seems to be that several people now have said that it has actually scratched their MB/MBP. They followed the outlined technique for removing the case properly and said they've assumed it's a little piece of dirt or something that got between the case and the macbook and wore a scratch or two, or else it's that the case is so tight and so any movement causes it to scrape where ever it can get a little give around the laptop case.

Others have claimed that the vent doesn't line up properly and that things start to get hot. I'm just not sure the case is worth it / necessary for me since I won't be trucking this thing around a lot. The inCase neoprene thing is probably more than enough for my applications.

Very interesting, thanks for posting this information. I think that I would be most concerned about the vent alignment issue as that may point to incorrect or sloppy tolerances within the manufacturing specs. I think the best bet would be to test drive a Speck unit at a store.

Does anyone out there happen to already have a Speck that they could comment on?

That said, an equal number of people said they love it! I'm just not sure I'm willing to shell out that much money until I've researched a bit more and heard some really outright positive reviews. There are quite a few fans in these forums as you can see by searching for "Speck" posts, so it can't be THAT bad... :)

Would highly recommend a soft microfiber protector such as the Shaggymac. They last for years and have kept all my screens mint.
 
I also rec a keyboard cvr and a neoprene case like encase-my ibook
sirvived a bike wreck because it was in neoprene case.
 
I am going to pick up one of the Booq cases. The Vyper series have a hard ballistic nylon exterior and plush interior. They seem like a pretty good quality case.

This was the best case I've ever had. It has velcro which was nice. I've had 2 cases for other computer with zippers, and the zippers seem to break off. Also recommended maccase to a friend for his MBP, great protection.
 
From my personal use, I can highly reccommend the STM Rebound sleeve. Its a little thicker than your average neoprene sleeve but it provides much more protection against light bumps and knocks.

Oh and for cleaning the screen, any soft microfiber cloth will do, I use the ones in the iKlear pack or some generic PDA ones I had around.

Hi,

Just a quick question - does the spec see-thru limit the heat that comes out of the bottom of the laptop so you can easily use it on your lap?

I am having a heating problem with the new mac book pro.
