Protecting pages/member site

I am trying to set up a member site and would like to know the best way to do it. Can I set up some way to protect pages on my own or do I need to buy some software.
PS I am not very goos with this stuff so the less complicated the better

you could go to tutorialized.com and try and find a tutorial. you could also get a content management systum, such as joomla.
