Proteus, Fire and MSN messenger service

I've been having this annoying problem lately. If I log in using the MSN Messenger app, everything works fine.

But, if I use either Proteus or Fire to get on to the service, it keeps logging me off every minute or so. Annoying to say the least. Any ideas, why this may be happening?

With Proteus, I tried deleting the plist, downloading a fresh copy of the latest version, but those didn't work.

Any suggestions? Or anyone else having the same problem?
 
Some changes were happening last week with the MSN servers. The guy who creates Proteus (which I use) has just updated it to sort it out. 3.06 is now out so you can just upgrade. I had the exact same probelm but now it works fine again.
 
Yeah, man, I tried it, but it still didn't work. It gave me the same problem, would log me off and on, off and on, every minute or so.

BTW - Adium 1.6 at least, doesn't seem to have MSN support.

You could search the Proteus website forums. That's what I did - there was a thread about this problem and, halfway through, the creator of the app (screen name: Proton) posted a package with instructions on where to insert it. I did that and it fixed the problem. Since then 3.06 came out but I didn't update because it appeared to basically so what I said and would require registration hassles (why upgrade if it's working fine?!). I assumed that the new version would do what I just did, but maybe it doesn't, so you could try downloading the package on the forum site.

There's an Adium 2.0 alpha that has MSN support, the download link is right underneath the 1.6 one, it says "Newest Alpha" or something.
 
I'm with ubergeek...

Adium 2.0 is the best thing that has happened to IM for me in a long time. Everything is so customizable and yet the program runs quickly and responsively.

i downloaded the latest alpha adium, march 6, but there's no option for an msn account. and man, that icon scares me, reminds me of a furbie.
i'm gettin used to proteus right now, its pretty good. i've got a few problems with it... don't like how you can't reduce just the proteus volume, i don't like my alerts sounding as loud as my music, i like the alerts being subtle, which is why its a good thing you can customize the sounds cause the built in one's are a bit intense. I like the floater window, that's pretty good, and the attached message center things, like trillian. I liked fire a lot untill it konked out a week ago or so. The message browswer was sweet, a little section of the contact window that listed all your converstations and how many unread messages were in each, clicking on them to bring up the chat window. You could turn down the volume super low. And of course it was just about as customizable as you could want. My problems with fire were that for some reason, people's nicknames didn't update and that file transfers didn't seem to work for anything above 35K.
 
As you all probably know, Microsoft are closing down the MSN network to only Microsoft applications with the upcoming (April) release of MSN Messenger 6.2. Does anyone know if the 3rd party client developers are doing anything about this?

man, that stinks, i'm only now getting into this third party business
 
would people please stop saying adium? it's aim only. i used to use it until i got tired of running three message apps at once, and switched to proteus. it's quirky, but faster than fire (was).

there have been long strings of threads about msn problems in proteus (indigofield.com forums). all i can suggest is to keep up with those for any updates or fixes. version 4 is supposed to use a new backend and fix scores of bugs - maybe msn will be one of them.

Not a surprise. MS can't compete in the open market, so it always has to build artificial walls to make its products survive in its own corner.

What we can do is to help make that corner as small as possible; and below a certain threshold everyone will abandon it entirely. If you know anyone who uses MSN, encourage them to switch to Jabber! (www.jabber.org) Jabber is decentralized and not controlled by a corporation. Like email servers, anyone can set up a jabber server and create accounts to suit their needs.

Far more important than the client, is the protocol being used! Support Jabber, the open IM protocol, and help lock MS out of illegally dominating another market!
 
It would be nice if there was just a standard protocol, like the one used for the web (IP or whatever it's called). It's a bit stupid that there are so many - at least Apple just picked AIM to use, rather than adding another bloody protocol to the list. And at least, MSN, etc, has been 'hacked' to allow its use in Proteus, Fire, etc. Just as well, considering the MSN client on the Mac is a POS.
