Proud New Mac Owner!

Hey guys,

I've been reading these boards for a while now and I finally decided to pull the trigger and switch from my old Dell to a brand new 24"iMac. I pretty much just went with the 2.8ghz 320gb hd since the most I'll be doing is a bit of photo/video editing but nothing too intensive. Just wanted to say, from someone who's been reading a lot of what you guys say, thank you for all your advice in helping me make this decision easier than I thought it would be. Now comes the fun part of migrating all my files. I don't own an external hard drive so whoever has done this over their network connection, could you tell me how easy it is and how much time I'm looking at for the transfer? Thanks guys!

Be sure to come here first for any questions you might have. As far as transferring files, I haven't done it that way, so I don't know. I imagine that it isn't too hard, but it might take a while, depending on how much you have to transfer.

Assuming u have router, its pretty easy to transfer files from xp or vista to OSX just share the folders that has files u wanna transfer and u can start drag and drop.

I bought the exact same machine and did the exact same migration from an XP system. EVERYTHING went pretty much smoothly by just opening the folders shared from my XP box and dragging dropping. I did have ONE issue. I dragged the pictures/folders from the "My Pictures" folder in to an open instance of iPhoto. This correctly imported all the photos in to Iphoto and created nice events. The problem was that my thumbnails got screwed in iPhoto. This may have been down to some bad image files in the My Pictures directory that iPhoto couldn't read or any of the other myriad of files that XP puts in there (the thumb files etc.) that iPhoto wasn't expecting. If i had to do it again I would drag the My Pictures folder over to local HD on the mac, clean it up some and then drag it locally in to iPhoto to import. As it stands I'll probably repair my iPhoto DB at some point to fix the thumbnails (doesn't look to big a deal, all the original photos are stored in the Originals folder under iPhoto).

Connect both the mac and the pc to the same network. Share the folder(s) you want to connect to and drag and drop to the location on the mac you want, using finder you should see your PC on the left pane. I recommend dropping to a TEMP location then importing music/photos/videos after with their proper apps.

Use Go to Server from Finder's Go menu. Then you should just have to type the IP address, but you might need to type smb://

Congrats Myke2! There will be a few "growing pains" here and there, but once you get used to Mac, you'll never want to back to PC again! We recently switched (Jan) when I got my MacBook, but added the 20" iMac 2 weeks ago and we couldn't be happier.

Ok so I've tried typing in smb:// then my IP address and I'm getting nothing. I hate to be a pain but is there any way someone could walk me through the process of finding my network address on my PC and enabling sharing on my C drive so I can move these folders over tonight. I love my mac and all but now I need my music and video files on here ASAP!!!! Thanks guys!
