provisioning profile works for os 3.0 but not 2.2.1

I have a working system for OS 3.0, but when I ty to install an older OS version (2.2.1) on my iPod, xCode does not accept my provisioning profile.

If anyone has experience with this, I would like to know if dropping back to an older version is easy/strait forward or should I just start kissing my iPod and thank it for working with OS 3.0
