PS fan Mac Pro 5,1 high speed Mavericks

The power supply fan of my Mid 2010 Mac Pro spins up after a few minutes since I installed 10.9.
There is no real activity, only Safari and processor usage is very low. Power usage is about 96W reported by Hardware Monitor Light.
Temperature Power Supply 1 & 2 are 25°C so no reason to spin up the fan.

I tried resetting the PRAM and SMC but no result.
On ML the fan speed is normal.
I do have a GTX 680 (flashed) installed, connected to an external power supply.

Am I the only one with this problem? Any suggestions on solving it?
I did an update of 10.9, not a fresh install.

I have noticed that, when using Mavericks, my PCI fan will begin gradually climbing from 800 rpms to 1000 rpms.

I do not know what triggers this. It normally happens within the first hour of usage. There are no fluctuations. Just a gradual, gentle, steady climb in speed eventually settling at 1000 rpms.
There it will remain until I reboot, at which point, the PCI fan returns to 800 rpm.

I am beginning to suspect that Safari might be responsible. Try using another browser and see what happens.

EDIT: I just re-read your post. You are talking about Power Supply fan. So sorry. Watch your PCI fan anyway, though. Mabye it does the same as mine.

My 5,1 seems to be behaving fine fan-wise but I'll check the rpms.

EDIT : Nope, iStat shows fans are fine after sever an hours of use... 856, 600, 800, 600, 600

About 30 minutes ago, my PCI fan began it's steady increase. I've been on most of the day, but it's only now just started to climb to 1000.
I was browsing through some high-resolution jpeg's using XEE, so that may have triggered it.

This never occured in Mountain Lion. I use a GTX 650 by Zotac.

And the fan is now at 1077 rpm and still going up.

Google shows that there are indeed some problems with fans and 10.9.
I'm going to try a fresh install later today but for now I will go back to ML because this noise is no fun

Solved

I completely removed Hardware Monitor, also the items in the startup folder, and everything is normal now.

Mine only increases speed when PCI speeds up. but it only reaches 615 rpms.

It is increasing speed, you can hear it.

It doesn't stop at 1077, it just goes on and on to more than 1200.

It ran fine after I removed Hardware Monitor for a period but then it started all over again. So, it is not solved after all but it takes longer before the fan start speeding up.
I'm going to do a clean install, I have read reports on the net that this might solve it.

It's very normal on mac pro 4,1 and 5,1 with some 150W-225W graphics cards (like your GTX 680) installed and there is no solution right now…

If you make cold boot, your GTX will run at more Wattage, as usual and you will get over 1000RPM on PCI and PS fan. But if you run graphic intensive application for some minutes, your fan speed will go down back to 800/650 RPM. You can reboot (also to other OS) and it will still at 800/650 RPM. If you turn off your mac pro, it will go again to over 1000RPM…

Some users wrote, they installed new OS on other drive and the problem gone, but it don't work on every system.


Apple should make an EFI update to fix it! But think, they are not interested on it…
