OS X PS3 Controller Refuses To Pair

I'm sorry if this is the wrong sub-forum; the majority of the similar posts I've seen were all in this sub-forum, so I thought this would be the place to post this.

But basically, I'm running OS X 10.9.2, and I cannot get my PS3 controller to pair. I've watched countless videos where they simply plug in the controller, hit the button on the controller, unplug, and it's paired. This is not the case-- my Mac will claim that the PS3 controller is connected, but no application (Joystick Mapper nor Gamepad Companion) can detect its input, and the four lights keep flashing for a few seconds, then the controller shuts off.

So, uh, does anyone have some wisdom they can share on this matter?

If as you say the four lights flash for a few seconds then it shuts off I would say the controller either needs charging or something is wrong with it.

The four flashing lights is standard behavior for a controller which is not connected to any devices I thought.

It is but a bit more than a few seconds.

Not really. The DS3 controller continue flashing until told by the device they are connected to which number they have. The Mac drivers don't seem to do this, which is why the controller keeps flashing, even if it actually is connected and can be used in games.

Yep, the flashing then off after pairing usually means your batteries are flat. Also some fake Sony PS3 pads can have sync issues due to the Bluetooth chipset not being 100% genuine.
