I've not really been aware of this and wondering if this was April fools in Nov when I caught a blurb in the back of Nov 2011 PC Gamer Magazine, the headline:

Xbox on Windows? Apple responds with PS3 support. Strange bedfellow in the new "hybrid market".

Mentioning that Apple and Sony today announced a deal to bring PlayStation3 games to the Mac...

I've been a little busy, has this been mentioned in MacRumors news?
Thanks!

They are probably just porting some PS3 titles to Mac. Not really that big of a deal if you ask me. Unless they are doing GT5 that is.

Aren't PS3 games like 50gb? I don't want that on any of my Mac, and I don't want to take the time to download them.

Hardly many are even near that. A good chunk of them are 15 and below. If even near that.

And even then lots of the games just have a few GB of useless padding and uncompressed video/audio which takes up a ton of space. You won't see that in the Mac versions so don't worry, file size will be normal.

Uncharted 2, God of war 3 and final fantasy 13 are all around 40gb. but most of the rest are like 4-10 GB with padding to fit on a dual layer blu ray
The size on the Blu-ray discs and the size they would be for a computer are different, they would likely be 7-8GB for Mac, if offered on a DVD.
depends on the size and port. A direct port of the above games would require 5 dual layer DVD's.

That makes a bit of sense too, since both systems (OSX and PS3) focus on OpenGL.

Interesting times!

You got me curious so I found a leaked PDF version of the mention magazine and read the said article. I will say the article is a joke. It even ends with this sentence: "Specifics remain sketchy, but an unnamed source familiar with the plans confirmed a new Blue Screen of Death achievement". It even mention that Kevin Butler during the announcement attempted to load a blu-ray disk in his iMac 's DVD drive. Come on! If there was a real rumour it will be all over the internet! :p Even M$ won't transfer all 360 titles to PC

I read it once and recognized tongue in cheek, but I was not sure if there was truth mixed in with humor or if it was all spoof, hence my question about MR coverage. However today after reading some of the other articles (on the same page), it does look like all spoof, so my apologies if I got anyone excited.

The page in PC Gamer is titled The Daily Blink and there is a web site by with the same authors names.

Here is a blatant one: :)

Game developers running out of names for dimensional gateways. AUSTIN- A lead writer suffered a nervous breakdown yesterday when his team failed to find a name for a dimensional gateway which didn't involve "rifts", "portals", or any of the other 25 currently copyrighted terms.

No harm done mate :) A such thing will be great for Apple but harmful for Sony. Same with Microsoft. With Cloud gaming starting to gaining heigh and the success of X-Box Live! and PSN, the whole game industry is moving online gaming with DLCs and other stuff. PC gaming is going stronger than ever and consoles are getting out of date and loosing their significant, thus all that PS Move/X-Box Kinect, attempts to give consoles a meaning, something PCs can't do. Some even question the next-gen of gaming consoles already. If we need them and what they must do to bring some "refreshment".
It will be stupid from Sony loosing the only advantage its console has: exclusive games. Sony and Apple can work together for lets say for some crossplatform online gaming, like Valve with Steam and Portal 2 has done or even SOE (Sony MMOs division) bring some clients to Mac! DC Online in example has cross platform between PS3 and PC, why not a Mac? ;) but none of these is happening as Sony is afterall an "enemy" to Apple having its own digital movies and music distribution platforms. Not as good as iTunes, but they are there and Sony will want to continue growing them, especially with that newly announce Sony Online Network thing.
Microsoft now is playing all and all in Windows 8. 360 is loosing the lead, Games for Windows brand didn't go as planned, Android and iOS destroyed Windows Mobile 7. Even Apple with Macs and OS X 10.7 is starting to gaining height and MS doesn't want that. We all saw what Apple is and what is able to do... I suspect an integration of X-Box Live to Windows 8, as it is a successful online platform (games of windows isn't) and later on support of some Windows 8 features to the next X-Box console, maybe integrate that ugly dashboard :p Microsoft is a computer OS manufacture and a game console manufacture as well. He needs PC gaming, but also needs to attract people to X-Box as there MS get more money from loyalties, fees etc. So MS from that point of view as well needs to find a way to get more "control and money" from PC gaming without loosing from console gaming. This way I think MS will try to mimic the iPhone "halo" effect. If you want the complete experience you need both Windows 8 and XBox, to get the complete ecosystem, same with iPhone-Mac and iCloud...

Sony is already focusing on Android, since it's an open OS that they can lock down with their own stuff, so if this rumor were true, I'd be completely surprised.

It sounds like something that an individual would say in response to Win 8 supporting XBox Live, but not fully grasping why that works and Sony's PSN on Apple doesn't.

And as appleguy123 pointed out, Macs don't support Blu Ray, which IMO, it's because Steve Jobs now hates competition. If Sony were to bring their games to OS X, then Apple would have to also adopt Blu Ray, as I doubt Sony would give up something for nothing.

Blue Ray is the follow on to DVD. I can't imagine Apple not supporting it.

Steve Jobs has already voiced his strong opinion against Blue Ray. The fact that Apple has not already started offering it as a standard component or BTO option as well as the fact they do not support third party hardware solutions indicates they have no intention of supporting it. I think their long term focus is on digital HD downloads.

I don't mind, and actually quite enjoy not having an optical drive on my MBA. The only place I want an optical drive is on my file server, to load my discs as disc images to only grab through my network.

Anyway, as far as gaming on the Mac, IMO it's all but dead. Again IMO. I wish SC2 could be played on the 360 or PS3...
