TL;DR: I used Safari to upload 200GB of files to Google Drive because it was faster than the app, and now 200GB of data is stuck in Safari’s “Documents and Data” cache.
I am a professional video producer, and have been mostly loving my iPad Pro + Lumafusion as my primary workflow.
However, with Google Drive as my archival storage solution (27TB and counting) I have found the Googles app incredible slow at uploading. When Apple introduced ”desktop class” browsing to the iPad however, I found that the web interface for Google Drive provided a much faster way for me to backup and archive 100GB+ projects. Until I noticed my storage was now being held hostage by Safari’s “Documents and Data”.
Those familiar with “Documents and Data” know that the only way to force an app to delete their hidden cash is to delete and reinstall. But in the case of Safari, that is impossible. Frustratingly this seems to be a rarely discussed issue on support forums with the most common advice being “wait until it deletes the data on it’s own”. Well, it’s been two weeks. Guess it is time to wipe out and reinstall.
Don’t make my mistake. If you want to avoid the super slow speeds in the Google Drive app for large uploads, or are planning to do any kind of uploading via browser, consider using a browser you can delete and reinstall at will.
