I just spent hours trying to figure out why the EQ setting on my iPhone and iPad suddenly stopped working – it worked fine earlier today, then later when I was trying to do some A/B comparing, changing the setting back and forth would have no effect.
Turns out, I was listening to a different piece of music than earlier. Some trial and error revealed that most of my recordings were actually working fine with EQ, just a handful weren't (all of my Sibelius and Dvorak symphonies). After further examination I discovered the cause – those particular recordings were encoded at 96Khz sample rate, and apparently the EQ does not work with songs at that sample rate. Re-encoded them to 44.1Khz, and they work fine now.
