I believe this may have been the case before, but wanted to confirm here as I just went through the process for my new M4 IPP.

AppleCare+ does cover the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro. The accessories do not need to be purchased on the same receipt, or from the same store, and also do not have to even be purchased the same day in order for them to be covered. For reference, I bought my Magic Keyboard 5/23 at Best Buy and my iPad 5/26 at Verizon.

However, the accessories will show as "Limited Warranty" in these cases under the "Check Coverage" section of the Apple Support App. I had to call and upload my receipt from Best Buy and they manually had to add the serial numbers for the accessories to the plan. It will then show up as having AppleCare+ protection.

I'm not sure if skipping this would cause issues down the line, but I figured I'd just go through the process of adding them to the plan now rather than trying to fight it our later if I tried making a claim and they said it wasn't covered.

The support specialist said they did not see a mandatory time frame to add the keyboard and pencil to the plan, as long as there was an active AppleCare+ plan on the iPad.

Thanks for sharing the part about checking coverage on the Magic Keyboard and the Apple Pencil. I didn’t think to do that but I’ll do that just to avoid any issues in the future!

I just got off the phone with Apple Support via chat and was connected to the agreement administration who handles the issue of adding to care policy. As I was told by the administrator, you are limited to one accessory when adding to an Apple policy. So if you purchased the Magic Keyboard and the pencil you will have to choose which one you wanted to add. As a side note the Magic Keyboard was purchased a day later and the pencil was purchase on the same order as the iPad Pro 13”M4 through the Apple Store app as was the Magic Keyboard. When checking the pencil in the support app it already showed with Apple care. The associate who I was speaking to asked if I wanted to remove the pencil and add the MKB.

That is dumb. Their website specifically states that it covers both. So Apple better honor it.

https://www.apple.com/support/products/ipad/

Service coverage includes the following:

  • Your iPad
  • Battery1
  • Apple Pencil1
  • Apple‑branded iPad keyboard1
  • Included USB cable and power adapter
  • Unlimited incidents of accidental damage protection, each subject to a service fee, plus applicable tax

Apple really makes it complicated and confusing with the iPad for some reason. I’d rather just pay separately for the AppleCare for the accessories at this point.

I reactivated my chat from earlier and got the same answer. Apple support has now escalated it to a return phone call at 9:30 from and Apple Care Specialist.

Edit 10:05pm EST
problem solved. Since only one accessory can be show as covered it the app when and if there is an issue with the one not showing, Apple Care can swap it in the system. I have this in writing and backed up by a case number from Apple care.

Apple needs more money to be able to update their back end to cover this scenario. 😂 crazy a billion dollar company can’t figure that out!

I had a long (half hour) conversation with a tier 2 AppleCare rep about this a couple days ago.

They said they’ll switch out the accessory as needed to cover both under AppleCare. He said they don’t even track whether you’ve asked for coverage incidents on multiple Pencils or KBs, as long as the iPad Pro policy is active.

The one accessory thing is basically just an internal implementation detail they have to work around. To complete a claim a store rep may have to contact AppleCare on your behalf (or you can contact them yourself via support before bringing it in) in order to swap in the broken accessory as active. But past that bit of friction coverage won’t be an issue.

Below is the footnote from Apple Care for iPad https://www.apple.com/support/products/ipad/

1. Service coverage is available only for iPad, its original included accessories, one compatible Apple Pencil, and one compatible Apple-branded iPad keyboard used with your iPad for protection against (i) defects in materials or workmanship, (ii) batteries that retain less than 80% of their original capacity, and (iii) each incident of accidental damage protection is subject to a service fee, plus applicable tax. For all 11-inch iPad Pro (M4), 13-inch iPad Pro (M4), 11-inch iPad Air (M2), and 13-inch iPad Air (M2) models, the service fee is $29 for screen repair and $99 for all other accidental damage. The service fee for accidental damage to all other iPad models is $49. The screen repair service fee is only available on 11-inch iPad Pro (M4), 13-inch iPad Pro (M4), 11-inch iPad Air (M2), and 13-inch iPad Air (M2) models and when there is no other damage present. The service fee for Apple Pencil or Apple-branded iPad keyboard is $29. Replacement equipment that Apple provides as part of the repair or replacement service may contain new or previously used genuine Apple parts that have been tested and pass Apple functional requirements. AppleCare+ coverage begins on your AppleCare+ purchase date. See terms for full details.

Wish they would fix that. Definitely foresee issues with Apple reps not being on the same page here saying they won't add your damaged accessory onto the plan to swap out to get it covered.

When I severely bent my 2020 iPP and MKB, Apple replaced both of them without me having to add the MKB to my AppleCare plan. They didn't ask for a receipt or anything, I just told them I also had a damaged MKB as well and they took care of me.

I got both the pencil and keyboard as a separate order - the first rep told me that they weren’t eligible for AppleCare with my iPad but a second tier rep helped me add the keyboard to my policy - so same as everyone else above, only one accessory can be officially registered, but technically both are covered.

According to AppleCare+ Terms and Conditions, It's only applied to one accessory:

The Plan covers the following equipment (collectively, the “Covered Equipment”): (i) the Airpods, Apple TV, Apple Watch, Beats device, HomePod, iPad (including one Apple Pencil, one on Apple Pencil Pro, and/or one Apple-branded iPad keyboard to be used with your covered iPad, referred to as “iPad Input Devices”), iPhone, or iPod listed on your Plan Confirmation (“Covered Device”), and (ii) the accessories contained inside the original packaging of your Covered Device.
Hardware Service for iPad Input Devices is limited to one iPad Input Device used with your covered iPad and/or the replacement iPad Input Device provided to you by Apple under Sections 3.1 or 3.2 of this Plan that is used with your covered iPad.
ADH Service for iPad Input Devices is limited to one iPad Input Device used with your covered iPad and/or the replacement iPad Input Device provided to you by Apple under Sections 3.1 or 3.2 of this Plan that is used with your covered iPad.

But, It is not what user will thinks when user sees AppleCare Products websites...

That is dumb. Their website specifically states that it covers both. So Apple better honor it.
