I was shocked  when I discovered that Cox offers twice the bandwidth at half the price so I switched immediately and canceled my service with AT&T Bellsouth. We were finally done. So I thought...

2 WEEKS LATER: I get my final bill from AT&T. I said kiss my ass and threw it away.

1 MONTH LATER: I get an envelope from AT&T that says something along the lines of "It's not too late to not switch". The letter inside said they would give me $150 (in services, of course) to come back to AT&T. I tossed that letter too.

2 MONTHS LATER: A later a salesman from AT&T calls me begging me to stay, saying that he would waive most of my previous bill in addition to giving me free call forwarding or something like that. I told him that's very thoughtful of AT&T, but it can't touch the speed of Cox and politely hung up.

3 WHOLE MONTHS LATER...

AT&T just won't stop- they're acting like stalkers. I get 2 letters today. 1 from their debt collection agency and the other is ANOTHER BILL!!! Apparently, they're still charging me for internet AFTER I canceled my service! (some fine print or something) AT&T went from "We desperately want your service" to "Fine, screw you!"

But hey, what's new?

I spent a decade in the debt collections industry. My accounts ranged from telcos to bank paper.

This isn't an AT&T issue. It's an industry-wide issue.

Bell does this (and how!), Rogers, everyone.

In most cases, it comes down to the customer's failure to read the fine print (re cancellation fees, etc.), but in other, less-frequent (but somewhat more publicized cases), it comes down to a mistake on the telco's part. Which rarely happens, truth be told.

Read your contract. Familiarize yourself with termination fees. Don't ignore the fine print.

Final bill. That says it all. Are you sure that the bill included nothing but charges after the disconnection? Oh, wait, you just threw it out. Seems to me you may want to see if you actually still owe them for services provided under contract, whether or not you used them.

Second, the news article you posted referred to LD charges in 1991! What does that have to do with internet service in 2010, especially considering we're not talking about the same company. That AT&T died years ago. Get real.

Third, please use TIMG tags (since you already seem particularly fond of lots of formatting goodness). We don't need need a wall of image to see it.

Thanks for playing. :)

So you throw a bill away and are appalled when they send a debt collection agency to you. What world do you live in?

The one in which I'd be calling them. Constantly. And then nailing them to the wall.

I'm out of the accounts recovery industry now, but boy oh boy, was it ever interesting talking to a lot of those clueless debtors.

I'm rooting for the collection agency. Ignorant (and monumentally clueless) debtors like you ruin it for upstanding consumers.

I always wondered or thought that it was the credit systems fault (as in bad system) the reason why many people are in debt or why the economy went down the drain. Now I see it's people like you try to play smart that ruin it for everyone.

Yeah, you gotta pay the last fee to have them get off your back. They have every right to bill you for usage even though you in that period cancelled the contract. They even marked it with "this is your last bill".

Seriously, go collection agency.

Where bunnies are welcome.
So, you think you don't have to pay your final bill, because you decided to change ISP's? And now you're going to owe even more for late fees and whatever else gets added on and you're complaining? GLWT kind of thinking in the future.

So you're stealing money away from ATT and now you're complaining that they're contacting you

6+ months of late fees and possible interest... this is going to end well for AT&T and bad for the OP.

At some point AT&T will just sell off the debt to a collector and forget about it. They'll only have gotten a small percentage of their money - the debt collection agency will hound him as well. What won't go well is that it will hit the OPs credit report negatively affecting his rating.

Poor credit can impact getting a job (employers now check credit reports), auto insurance rates, loan and credit card interest will be higher since the OP is a higher risk of skipping out on the debt, etc.
