Grrr. How are you guys finding it? There's no update for me in App Store, and when I try to go through beta.apple.com, it says the code has been redeemed.

Just started to check. I see some changes in Mail.app in the interface displaying activities like downloading messages etc. First thing I did was to rebuild the index, now hopefully I'll be able to see the Exchange mails again...

First thing the Mail app did was to crash but then it opened fine.

That is because there is no full installer for PB2. That code is the old one for PB1. You can't reredeem codes. Apple may issue new codes for new full installers. You can however redownload PB1 via purchases tab in mac app store if necessary, and update to PB2 via mac app store or direct links.

You can only make a bootable usb from a full installer. And I don't think PB2 exists as a full installer. Just a delta update.

Apple recommend upgrading to el capitan from mountain lion or above, not from lion or below.

So no. You don't have to upgrade from Yosemite. You could also upgrade from mavericks or mountain lion.

Alternatively you can clean install el capitan (i.e., start from an empty drive or partition). You can use a bootable usb of PB1 to do that and then update to PB2. Here are instructions to make a bootable usb for PB1: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/el-capitan-pb1-bootable-usb.1899261/

If apple release another PB full installer, those instructions should work for that too.

Thank you, I was going to update from Yosemite but I'm glad there's an option to clean install El Capitan PB1.

Why would you install the firmware upgrade first? I haven't had a request to upgrade firmware on my Late 2013, MacBook Pro?

Well I thought putting direct links here was against macrumors rules but vista980622 didn't think so as he said in this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/el-capitan-dp4-update-pkg-direct-link.1902467/ and moderators haven't deleted his links yet. (They were for DP2, DP3, DP4.) I know they used to delete this sort of stuff. Maybe they've relaxed the rules now.

So I'll have a go at it and see how long it lasts.

Install the FirmwareUpdate.pkg first because only OSXUpd10.11.pkg requires a restart.

You may have more success with this rather than trying to do it via MAS.

I said why. It is because of the two packages that download only OSXUpd10.11.pkg requires a restart.

There is no separate message about the firmware update in the mac app store. If you download the PB2 update via the mac app store, the firmware update downloads together with it. You can check in the folder /Library/Updates after downloading but before installing. There will be a new folder with numbers inside and if you open it there will be both OSXUpd10.11.pkg AND FirmwareUpdate.pkg. If you complete the installation via the mac app store these files will delete themselves. If on the other hand you do it via direct links, they won't delete themsleves.

There is nothing unusual about this. This is how it has been for every OS X build since the 10.10.2 betas.

Did you try using the direct links above in post #8 of this thread instead of the mac app store? That can often be more successful than the mac app store.
