Pulitzer Winner Rejected From App Store

According to The Nieman Journalism Lab, Apple has rejected from the App Store the first online-only journalist to win a Pulitzer Prize, Mark Fiore.

Laura McGann comments that "Fiore isn’t the first editorial cartoonist to clash with Apple. Last year, an app called Bobble Rep app, which used political caricatures by Tom Richmond, was initially rejected by Apple. After an online uproar, a few days later Apple changed its position, allowing the app into the store. (Fiore’s rejection landed in his inbox just a month later.) Daryl Cagle, who runs a cartoon syndication site with 900 newspaper subscribers, had a similar battle with Apple last year, waiting around for months before eventually being allowed in. And while Apple eventually ruled in those cartoonists’ favor, the company went on an app-banning spree in February targeting apps with bikini-level sexual content."

This is crazy, of course, and should give a pause to all the publishers contemplating engaging with Steve Jobs.

This really should be a much bigger story and it should be front page news: It is censorship, it is unpredictable, and it is noxious.

Instead, MacRumors is focused on the serial number change on the new Mac Books Pro....

The App Store approval process is about as arbitrary as a fart in a grade school classroom. It seems like everyone is just pointing fingers and no one is taking any responsibility. The last thing I need is to spend my time working on something that will never make it to market. Honestly, it was probably the worse 100 bucks I've ever spent on a SDK.

The App Store approval process is about as arbitrary as a fart in a grade school classroom. It seems like everyone is just pointing fingers and no one is taking any responsibility. The last thing I need is to spend my time working on something that will never make it to market. Honestly, it was probably the worse 100 bucks I've ever spent on a SDK.

Agreed. If Apple had solid guidelines that they actually followed, at least you'd know where you stand as a dev. But it's totally arbitrary. Will your app not be approved because you left a less than glowing remark about Apple somewhere? It shouldn't, but it might. Who the hell knows?

And no, Apple isn't becoming evil, they're catering to the lowest common denominator just like Walmart. Some thin-skinned type always on the lookout for something to turn into a lawsuit might "get offended" and Apple can't have that.
