Okay this morning I grabbed a 2.4 2010 refurb for 475 after tax and discounts. Tonight I grabbed a base 2011 for 590 after tax and discounts.

I am going to try to get snow to run on the 2011. Maybe maybe not


I will also try to get lion to run on the 2010.

This should work.

For a while I will have 3 minis in the house. the 09 the 10 the 11.

I have been waiting a while for this update. I had about 1400 in gift cards purchased on ebay for about 10 % off. I also get 5% with discover card and a federal government discount. 20 bucks on the new base mini.

I am look forward to comparing the 3 minis. Down the road I may get a server but i think I will wait.

I started a thread to compare mini's. Since you have, or will have all 3, would be great to do a rip with instructions I posted. Would give a good benchmark. You could start with the one you have. I have the 2010 I will test tomorrow. Since the 2011 doesn't have an optical drive, the downloadable file should do the job.

I have a mac book air super drive so i can do it with the drive on all 3.

I can also do a rip with your instructions. I am downloading the file on my mac pro with utorrent I will use handbrake to encode it. I just encoded it on the mac pro hex 3.2GHz the first encode was about 5 min with about 50 to 52 fps . done in mp4 1920 x 1080

the clip was fun to watch. I think it will be nice to toss in the mac pro scores for hand brake so I did.
I will post screen shots of the handbrake settings.


2010 mac pro hex 3.2 ghz with 32gb ram and an intel 600gb ssd and the 5870 graphics card
1st 5 min fps about 50
2nd 5 min fps about 50
3rd 4 min and 59 secs fps about 48.1


I have an iMac I will run this on the 2009 27 inch c2d imac has the better graphics card 4850 plus 16gb ram and a 1tb seagate hdd

it looks like the tests will be close to the 2.66 mac mini.

2009 iMac c2d 3.06GHz

1st test 19 min. 35 sec fps 12.21
2nd test 19 min 15 sec fps 12.46





next up will be the 2009 2.66 ghz mini nvidia chip down with a dual esata hack. the hdd will be in an owc case as a raid0

the first handbrake just finished on the 2009 mac mini

1st test 22 min 20 sec fps about 10
2nd test 22 min 12 sec fps 10.77
3rd test 22 min 13 sec fps 10.79



below are screen shots of the handbrake settings on both the 3 machines tested.

the 2010 2.4 mini comes on sat

the 2011 i5 2.3 base minis shows on mon. well so far the mac pro is king. I would love to see how the 2011 base mini compares to it.

fedex now shows the 2010 refurb coming on fri. it should test close to the 2009 2.66 mini

I went to this link and I used
utorrent to download it. I did the mp4 .torrent version 1920 x 1080

I then used hand brake.

I used large file just in case 1920 by 1080 in and 1920 by 1080 out same film rate as the source and i set audio to stereo

thats the one I did !

Apple sent me notice the 2010 2.4 and the 2011 2.3 are coming on fri so we get a lot of scores on the same file

that is amazing. triple the speed of the 2009 mac mini and I am certain it will be more then three times as fast as the the 2.4 2010 mac mini.

It is close to my hex 3.2 mac pro. In fact I am pretty sure it is faster then a 2010 quad 2.8 mac pro a 2500 machine and may tie the 2010 quad 3.2
mac pro. a 2900 dollar piece of gear.

So if you are doing a lot of handbrake work the server smokes.

It is impressive for such a little machine. It's been a while but I seem to remember my 2.93 i7 doing this task at right around 40 FPS and 5:45...should be on par with whatever last year's high end iMac 2.93 comes in at.

EDIT: For Reference: 27" iMac 2.93GHz i7 Quad Core 8GB RAM (2010) - 5 mins 39 secs @ 42.06 fps

okay I have the base 2011 mini hooked up it is the 2.3 model. I added a samsung 256gb ssd to it but that should not affect the score for handbrake as handbrake is cpu based. I will post up tests but i think I should get 9 minutes with this machine. the down load of the file is slow. I can't use the copy I have on my Nas server lion says i need an update and i should contact synology for an update. so I have to down load the file again.

19 mins so far to do the down load. this is not about the mini but the internet it is slow today.

first hand brake score was 14 mini 32 sec and 16.50 fps I shut all programs off for the second handbrake I got;

13 min 40 sec and 17.33 fps




I have discovered that 2gb ram does not cut it at all. i maxed the ram for all of handbrake.

handbrake needs 4gb ram. I was helped somewhat by the ssd but page in's and outs were bad. I am waiting on the ram so I am ending tests for the day.

Right now I have A Late 2006 Mini (Core Duo 1.83 Ghz) and a 2010 Mini Server.

My 2006 Mini was used to convert all my video to iTunes and has been a great system. but i can't imagine how much time I would have saved if I had done in on a 2011 Mini Server! My 2010 Mini server gets a little over 4000 on the 64bit GeekBench.

Right now my 2006 mini serves its life out as a MineCraft server but it often has problems keeping up with the load. So I ordered a 2011 Dual Core i7 to replace the mini server i use every day, and let my current server be a server.

I have Lion running on my 2010 Server runs Lion just fine (With 8 GB ram) so you should have no problem getting it set up. But my understanding is you won't get snow leopard running on the 2011 unless maybe you use some sort of virtualization?

I think next check i might order a 2011 server, So i can set up an X-Frid using the 2010 mini as the x-Grid server, the 2011 And the actual server and my new i7 as my every day system. Each with 8 GB ram and finally retiring my 2006 mini.

I love these things, they are so much fun.

and a mac pro hex 3.2 gets 5 min at 50 fps cost is 3k you could get 3 servers for the same price! do more work faster for the same price and spend a lot less power to do it!

As much as I dream of getting a Mac Pro you may have just sold me on the idea that a quad-core Mini server is a better choice.

Admittedly though when the Mac Pro is updated it should end up much faster than the Mac Mini again.

not that I regret having grabbed a mac pro last sept. But if the server 2011 mini was for sale sept 2010 I would have purchased it instead of the pro. I never needed the pro except for the hdd ability it had. Now a server and a 4 drive t-bolt and I have the same ability. cost 2k the pro was 2.5k. I am not a gamer so the gpu was not an issue.

Right on the mark! IF TB is as good as they say, no argument on expandability for the mini so no need for the mac pro. Just wish the mini server had at least a 2.5ghz or higher processor. Apple could have doubled the height and I still would have snatched one up in a heart beat. For now, I will wait a bit before deciding to upgrade. My 2010 is working just fine.
