Pulled the trigger on MBP... some advice please!

I'm moving out of Tokyo in a month or so, and I have been using an iMac CD 2.0 Ghz for the last year or so. Lovely machine, and I'll miss the beautiful screen.

As I can't take it with me, I've put the cash on the barrelhead and am expecting my Matte 2.4 Ghz SRMBP to arrive in a couple of weeks. Can't wait for it! Although I am dreading a yellow screen, and have noticed the nasty warping on most SR screens, there may be a chance of these issues having been addressed by then. I'll be selling the iMac shortly afterwards, once I've transferred my data.

What I wanted to ask is - is it worth re-installing everything? I have so many applications and plugins as I do all kinds of things on my machine - pro audio, design, game programming, web admin etc... Or should I just use the Wizard to send everything over in target mode?

The wizard (Migration Assistant) isn't perfect. I trust it with basic files such as documents, music and photos, but I'd never use it for apps. You're safer manually reinstalling them.

You would be better off reinstalling all of the applications you may have. The Migration assistant is perfect for documents, settings and the like, but I wouldn't trust it for applications.

Actually that gives me another question... If I'm within the 14 days return, and it does have a problem - and I didn't buy it from an Mac store (a licensed dealer instead) - can I send it back to Apple in a new country? I am emigrating again...

if your new country has an Apple store, I would just step in and make a genius bar appointment should any problems arise.

Well she finally arrived today...

First post from my new baby!

Here are my inital impressions:

Was pretty sure there would be a bit of warping on the lid, and there was. It's not bad and I've seen worse in the Apple stores.

Was also really worried about getting the Samsung screen, and sure enough I got it. It's the matte version. It's actually not all that bad. There seems to be a darker band towards the bottom at first look, although I can't honestly see that it's any yellower. Definitely slightly darker though. I'll have to see if I can live with it over the next week or so. There's no stuck or dead pixels though. All in all it's a great screen, incredibly bright compared to my old TiBook, and much cleared than it felt in the shop (seemed a bit fuzzy).

Coming from a TiBook the keyboard's lovely, as is the decent hinge and magsafe made me giggle when it first snapped into place. Haven't tested it out speed-wise compared to my iMac CD, but it definitely feels snappy. Ooh, just noticed the backlit keyboard, that's nice too - is the screen supposed to dim at the same time though?

Anyway, so far, I love it to be honest, more than I thought I would. My only dislikes are the slightly uneven backlight and bit of screenwarp, ah and the yellow tint that shows up when viewing the screen at an angle (I know it doesn't affect actual use though). But it's nigh-on perfect, and I think we're gonna be very happy together, hehe!

Ok after further testing (especially with that two white rectangles fullscreen image that's been floating about) I definitely have the yellowish bottom half. I'm disappointed to say the least. The difference in hue and brighness was very large indeed. Not only that but less than 30 degrees off centre and greys become a deep sickly yellow giving me around 40 degrees of my supposed 170 degree viewing angle.

Just wondering if I can live with it, and whether the Mac shop people here in Tokyo will acknowledge it. It is pretty unacceptable though.

Also seems to be running very hot with only safari running. How can I check the temperature? [another edit] - well it's 50 degrees / 70 on the GPU under iStat. Is that normal?
