Pulled the trigger on a new iMac purchase a few hours ago. This is my first endeavor with an Apple computer (other than my iPhone)...I'm yet another switcher. Picked up the 24" with the 3.06 CPU but, following the advice on this forum, purchased my ram upgrade from Crucial rather than buying from Apple. I also thought about buying used from one of several private parties, but felt like my first adventure with an iMac should include a full serving of AppleCare. If all goes right, the iMac should show up on my doorstep Friday. I can't wait!!!

I wanted to take a moment and thank all the folks on these forums for all the great guidance. This leap from Windoze to OS X is much easier as a result of the great advice received from all you folks.

Thanks and clear out room for another seat on the Apple bandwagon!

Congrats! You can always wait until a year to purchase AppleCare. You will not be dissappointed with that computer. I have the 20" and my cousin has the 24". The 24" is an unbelievable computer

congrats! i got my first mac about a year ago, it was an imac too, and i couldnt be happier, its an incredible machine

That is an awesome way to start out. Unboxing a shiny new computer is very cool.

I did my own memory upgrade on my iMac and it is very easy. It's a little different then the traditional PC where you remove a big side cover for access. With the iMac just lay it face down on a soft clean towel to protect the screen and you can remove the small plate from the bottom of the screen.

You will really enjoy the screen quality and the quiet of the computer. It's nice to browse the Internet in the evening and not have a roaring fan.

I leave mine running (iMac - only a week in my possession) and funny to walk to the office and not hear a fan roaring away like a plane.

Very nice computer. so much to learn about Leopard too. Even after reading through everything you will have more new things to grasp.

Thankfully I work on a Mac at work too and things are cool with shortcuts now.

Update

My iMac showed up via FedEx at 6 p.m. on Friday evening. Had it unboxed and running by 7:00.

Funny thing - I figured it would take all weekend to do my initial migration from PC to iMac. It actually only took about an hour - been playing ever since. This thing is just amazing.

It's true what they say: "once you go Mac, you'll never go back."

Now my wife is pouting...wants to swap out her 3-month-old Dell desktop for a new MBP. We'll see...

Again, my thanks to all the good people here at MacRumors. My experience would likely be much different were it not for all the tips I've read here.

24"! Lucky! Haha, congratulations, I hope I will one day get a 24" screen as well :p. I think i'll be buying refurbished though. New is too expensive for me :D

I'm very happy with my 3.06Ghz iMac as well. However, I have some bluetooth-related problem under Boot Camp.

I just sold my 9 month old macbook in hope to pick up a new 24" after the update, so stoked!!

my snowboard pictures from this season at bear will look even better now, YEAH!

FTETER.........nice to hear another person is looking for a better life than with MS. I too started looking the Apple way some time back and was truly surprised at how fast the change happened.

I found all the help I needed from a small cheep book by Robin Williams called The Little Mac Book. It is on the OS Leopard and is the Leopard Edition. I would recommend it for a fast understanding of how to make your Mac experience a happy one.

Good luck

I picked mine up this weekend, too - 3 month old 24", 2.8 for $1450 from a private party. Working well so far!

Looking to get rid of the MacBook after I get back from NY and revert to a Mac Mini my friend has (he was going to pay for it and still will if he wants it.. he's just had it since the start of this year but I want to get it again - though that won't help me much if I'm going to get a netbook again!).

Seriously thinking of the Advent 4211, but only if they sort out the headphone issue with OSX. Well, I'll probably get it anyway, just no OSX! Then when I finally settle down again, iMac perhaps? Depends on my needs really and if they manage to cock that up too with no Firewire!
