Does the iPhone automatically insert a space after a "." and a "," ?

ie. If you use David Pogue's trick of sliding across to a period or comma, when you release your finger (and the keyboard goes back to ABC mode), will there also be a space after the period or comma, or do you have to press space manually?

No. You have to press space manually.

But, if you hit space after the period or comma, it automatically reverts to the "ABC" keyboard from the punctuation one. You don't have to switch back and then press space. Not perfect, but one less keystroke.

Yeah...but David Pogue's method switches back to ABC mode when you lift your finger anyway - ALSO inserting a space here would mean even less keystrokes :p Minor annoyance.

Very often you don't want a space after a period. E.g. "www."

Yeah, but I personally type a lot more standard text/sentences than I do web links. In Mail/SMS, I'd much prefer to have to occassionally backspace to delete the space, than have to ALWAYS add one. Unless you're trying to save a character in an SMS, a comma will always need a space after it (unless you're doing a smiley, in which case you'd be in the normal punctuation-view anyway, tapping space when you've finished the symbol), and unless you're doing weblinks or something else, a period will always want a space after it (or two, to be 100% accurate).
