Purchase despite problems?

I am a web developer and I've just sold my old laptop with the idea of buying a macbook (possibly pro), but I've been hearing all the problems with heat etc.

I intend to buy one within a week (if I decide to buy one at all), and in the time between wanting a macBook and getting the money together I have heard about all the problems.

Heat, discolourisation and batteries swelling are the problems I have heard of, but I assume Apple would replace anything that has such problems?

I was looking at getting a macBook white 2ghz with an upgrade to 80gb hdd from the Apple Higher Education store, the price comes to £818 inc VAT. (RAM upgrades will be from elsewhere to 2gb)

I plan to take this on holiday to Crete, so would it cope in the heat there?

Is it worth saving a bit more and getting the lowest macBook Pro because from what I gather they do not have the same problems (Apart from the battery problem, but feel free to tell me I am wrong)? I would make use of the better graphics card if I had one, but if I buy a macBook (With rubbish Intel "not so extreme" extreme GMA900 gfx) it wouldnt be the end of the world for me. Does the macBook Pro become as hot as the macBooks?

Just get AppleCare and be prepared to send in out for repair. Other than that, it's a good computer for the money.

The reason you see more people with complaints about the new laptops is that most people don't post threads saying that there laptop is great and has no problems. So like on any forum the smaller number of people that have problems will post more frequently then those that have no problems.

Also I guess Apples are the thing to talk about I mean you do not really see whole forums dedicated to Dell laptops etc (Other than on their own websites lol)

@x86 - I dont really want to pay extra for 3 years - im sure any major problems will occur in the first 90 days - especially if i take it to Crete in the heat - that will test whether its going to be okay or not. Knowing my luck it will break on the first day of my holiday so ill be stuck without it for 2 weeks before I can even return it! Lol

I've been debating whether to go with the Macbook or a z60t Thinkpad. I ordered the Thinkpad but it didn't arrive when told, so considered cancelling the order. But on reflection, given all the problems with both the Macbook and Macbook Pro, I'll be sticking with the Thinkpad afterall. They're known for reliability and support which seems to be lacking with the Apple products.

I'll come back when (if?) Apple gets its act together.

But I won't be giving up OSX, I just won't be switching to it. So, I guess I won't know what I'm missing (other than the mooing lap warmer).

I'd want to get an extended warranty on any laptop I ever purchased one due to the fact that the idea that if it didn't break within 90 days, then it must be quality parts doesn't hold as true for laptops as much as it does for desktops. A desktop computer is usually set up in one place and it sits there undisturbed until a new computer comes along or the person decides to rearrange their room and when it is moved, it is usually handled with as much care as possible.

A laptop on the other hand is always being moved around and jostled and isn't necessarily going to be handled nicely every single time it's moved. Also it is a much more cramped space which allows for greater heat to build up inside which can shorten the life of parts. Plus there are things like hinges and keyboards and all the moveable parts on a laptop that are built into the machine that can go bad through normal usage that wouldn't happen on a desktop.

Buy it, the whine is not bad (if it exists at all) althought if you want to use it on your lap, you sould deffinately put a few magazines in between. i bought a 2.0Ghz MBP and i dont regret it.
