I want to purchase a 24inch iMac for video editing. Do you guys think it would be safe to wait until Jobs keynote address on Jan 9th? Do you think any new iMacs will be released?

iLife '07 is not guaranteed to be released in January but there's a good chance it will be.

i doubt there will be any improvements to the iMac since no new chipsets are expected for January.

if it doesn't hurt you to wait, i don't see why you should rush into anything right now.

Yes, iLife and iWork have always, since they were introduced, been updated in January, at the MacWorld Expo.

If you look at the frontpage, there are pland for a "Core 2 Quad" chip, which I think would be ideal for the iMac. And besides the Mac Pro, the iMac is the product next to the MacPro that has had the most time since an update. I think there may be a chance that Steve will announce an iMac at MW, which will ship in a month or so.;)

Just wait until MW. There is a slight chance Leopard will also be out by then.;)

i typically recommend to purchase ONLY the day of or after an update.

so my advice to you is wait until they update, also-- check the imac buying guide here at macrumors and look at days since last upgrade and the average days between updates to help you

I really don't think that would work, because while the iMac uses mobile/laptop processors, the Core 2 Quad is a desktop processor, and a pretty hot one at that. It would not fit well in an iMac.

My guess is that it will be updated after Intel releases Santa Rosa, sometime in March or April. Maybe they'll do a speed bump at Macworld, but I doubt it.

the current iMac already has two 64-bit cores.
that's enough power for years to come.

just buy one...... maybe the iMac will get a slight bump in speeds or graphics card.... big deal.

the current X1600 chipset is more than enough for even serious Maya 3d work.
so video editing won't be a problem at all.

I would wait, I mean it won't hurt to wait just a few more weeks and you might then be able to get iLife 07 included.

The iMac wont get a new processor, taking it that 2.33 is the fastest Merom chip made so far, so pretty much you will be waiting for iLife 07.
