First off, I've been out of the iphone unlocked scene since the 2G iphones first came out. So I've been out of the game for a while but still remember few bits and peices. Now on to the issue, I purchased a used 3G iphone that is no more than 6 months old. The seller told me it is jailbroken and unlocked ready to go. well, I popped my t-mobile sim card in but it doesn't recognize my carrier. Here are the stats of the iphone as of now.

Has the 2.2.1 version, cydia and yellowsn0w installed.

can someone help me fix this problem or figure out if the seller sold me a bad iPhone?

Since it is 2.2.1 then they may of stupidly changed the baseband when they updated instead of doing a custom firmware update. Unless you update through something such as pwnage then the baseband will change.

That said, the changed baseband will not allow yellosnow to work therefore not allowing the iPhone 3G to be unlocked.

dammit... should i ask the seller for a partial refund or just return it?

so i'm guessing theres no way to revert backwards?

What city do you live? I stay in Houston. Proud Texan!!

You know, you could just purchase a Turbo Sim card unlock for your iPhone 3G. It even works with the baseband version 2.30.03. They have some on eBay. It's a hardware unlock that you put into the simcard tray on the bottom of the tmobile sim card. it's pretty inexpensive, & you don't have to mess with the software directly. This is how i'm going to unlock my iphone once i fix it's LCD. :D

Unless you can get an iPhone from somewhere else for the same price or cheaper what's the point in sending it back?
You should just leave negative feedback on eBay for the seller putting a false description on the auction.

Take the advice of 'techage14' and buy a turbosim for now, unless you don't mind waiting for a software unlock.
Shame that you didn't get what you wanted though.

you can unlock it, but it should be a hardware unlocking..i dont know how it works, but in dubai you can find cellfone shops everywhere selling unlocked and jailbroken phones...what you should do is just use AT&T until the DEV TEAM works out its magic....:):D

Im in Houston also. my store does iphone 3g repair and unlocking . We can do it with a turbo sim.

Seek a refund. That's been miss-advertised.

The idiot probably thought that because 2.2.1 can be Jailbroken it can be unlocked with yellowsn0w.

I'd never buy an unlocked iPhone, unless it's definatly factory unlocked. You're paying extra for something that no longer has warranty, doesn't have a SIM, and you can do what he's charging for (Unlocking and Jailbreaking) in around 10 minutes for free.
