I'm in the process of making a switch from PC to MAC (at least for video editing purposes), and will be buying a new MacPro within a couple weeks.

While looking for a good deal on a full version of the latest FinalCut Pro, I found one on Ebay for a few hundred dollars cheaper than buying direct from Apple. It's 5.1, came from a 100 percent seller and was advertised as "The full version, not an upgrade or academic version." It came with all serial numbers, etc. and is advertised as "never used." However, it only came with the discs and the installation guide - no full box.

My question is, I just received the CDs today, and, on each CD is the word "crossgrade." I don't have my Mac yet, so I'm unable to attempt to install these, but I just want to verify that the word "crossgrade" on the disc doesn't mean it's an upgrade version, i.e. it doesn't mean that I have to have an earlier version of FinalCut Pro for this to install properly.

I was under the impression that "crossgrade" refers to Apple's upgrade program, so this raised a red flag. If someone could fill me in here, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance...

The only thing thoses discs will do is convert your existing full install of Final Cut to a Universal Binary.

So technically its not an upgrade, but it isn't a new full install either. Its a patch :(

Here's the actual text from the Ebay ad:

Up for auction is the full retail version of Apple Final Cut Studio 5.1. This auction is for the 8 Discs with no box (serial numbers are new and unregistered, software has never been opened or used, FULL RETAIL VERSION, Picture of box for display purposes only). The 8 discs included are: The Final Cut Studio Install Disc (1) - Motion 2 Install Disc (1) - DVD Studio Pro 4 Install Disc (1) - LiveType Media Install Discs (2) - Apple Loops Install Disc (1) - Soundtrack Pro Install Disc (1) - andApple Pro Training Discs (2). This is the genuine thing — not an upgrade or academic version! This is the exact same software you would buy in the store or from Apple's web site. The normal price for this is $1299, but purchase from me and save! Unregistered and Unused, Disc have NEVER BEEN OPENED!!!

Seemed pretty clear to me that the discs were meant for a clean install. The guy offers a 7-day money back guarantee, but my problem is, I don't have my Mac yet. I know someone's I can test it on on Monday, but in the meantime, I was just a little nervous when I saw that "crossgrade" label.

These crossgrade discs should work fine. As the other post mentioned you need to send in you old discs to get the new crossgrade discs so the CG discs should be able to do a full install. Also Apple allowed people with just Final Cut Pro to upgrade to the entire FCS suite just by sending in the FCP disc.

Thanks, tipdrill. Appreciate it.

the crossgrade discs are not just a patch...they are a full install. don't worry, as long as you have the serial numbers to install the software you will be fine.
